The smell of roasting chestnuts, the clip-clop of hooves on a horse drawn carriage ride, the taste of hot mulled cider and voices raised in song by the glow of candlelight. These are just some of the sights, sounds and aromas that await visitors to historic Roscoe Village in Coshocton, Ohio on three separate Saturdays in December at their annual Christmas Candlelightings.
On December, 5, 12 and 19, the restored canal town of Roscoe Village is offering a free glimpse of an old-fashioned 1800’s Christmas celebration topped off with a candlelighting ceremony at 6 p.m. on the main stage. All candlelightings include the chance for visitors in the crowd to enjoy the singing of carols and the telling of a Christmas story. Then each person will light their complimentary candles and as the flame is passed from person to person, all will begin singing “Silent Night” as the 35 foot Village Christmas tree is lit. The candle lighting ceremony is free to all visitors.
Among the daytime activities at Roscoe Village on Candlelighting Saturdays are hands-on Christmas crafts, horse-drawn carriage rides and the chance to enjoy some of the strolling Christmas carolers. Visitors will also get the chance to learn how holiday traditions (like Christmas cards and letters to Santa) came into practice in the 1800’s. And, of course, Father Christmas will be making an appearance. Guests can stroll the Village at their leisure and see the Village adorned with evergreen wreaths and handmade decorations. Complimentary hot mulled cider and cookies will be offered to all visitors and you will be able to purchase roasted chestnuts.
Visitors can also partake of “A Roscoe Christmas” guided tour of the living history buildings in the Village at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. A special guided candlelit tour will be offered at 7 p.m. after the Candlelighting ceremony. Reservations for the evening tour must be made in advance. Call 740-622-7644, Ext. 12 to make reservations for the evening tour. Cost of “A Roscoe Christmas” tours are $9.95 for adults and $4.95 for students. Tickets for the daytime tours can be purchased at the Visitor Center. Keep in mind that admission to the Roscoe Village event is free but there are some charges for some of the activities.
