There have been several stories floating around this week about the possibility (or even probability) of Robert Englund reprising his role as Freddy Krueger. It appears that this is indeed not the case according to Robert Englund’s official Twitter page.
In a Twitter post dated September 29, 2015, Englund stated:
Just for the record, I will NOT be starring as Freddy in any new Nightmare projects, real or fictional
The Freddy Krueger actor also cross posted the statement to his official Facebook page.
Several news outlets including MoviePilot.com and INQUISITR have published article’s referencing the news originally posted by the horror website Bloody-Disgusting.
According to Bloody-Disgusting writer Jonathan Barkan, Robert Englund answered a few questions at a recent ComicCon concerning his “child killer” character. The site states that “Englund told them what he’d really like to see done with Freddy’s character, saying, ‘Well, I’d like to see ‘Nightmare in the Hood’! I would! I think it’d be really interesting to do a line of, like, retro 80’s hip hop ones and get a black actor to play “Freddy” and all the kids are, like, hip hop. Just do it the same!’“
Additionally, when asked about the actor’s thoughts concerning remakes, he responded “You don’t do remakes! I would do ‘Freddy 9’, you know? Or I would do ‘Freddy vs Michael Myers’. Or I would do a prequel.“
Those statements certainly portray something completely different than what Robert England is now saying via his social media accounts. The Comic-Con statements could also be construed as Englund possibly speaking from a filmmaker’s perspective and not necessarily about his own personal involvement.
What can certainly be taken away from all of this is that the actor responded to questions, yet he didn’t truly mean he would “really reprise” the role. It’s certainly fun to think about Englund slipping on the famous ‘razor glove’ again, however it’s apparent that he has no real plans to do so anytime soon – or ever.
The Wrap recently reported that they’ve learned of an Elm Street reboot in the works, stating “New Line Cinema has started developing a new “A Nightmare On Elm Street” film and has hired David Leslie Johnson (“Orphan”) to write the script,” and “Burned boogeyman Freddy Krueger will return once again to haunt characters’ dreams. The role was made famous by Robert Englund before Jackie Earle Haley slipped on the razor glove in 2010, though the slasher role will likely be recast with a younger actor this time around.” continued The Wrap.
A recently released Freddy Krueger fan film titled “The Confession of Fred Krueger” has been making a buzz in the horror scene and garnishing a lot of positive feedback. The short film is dedicated to the late Wes Craven and is a not for profit fan film inspired by the motion picture “A Nightmare on Elm Street” written and directed by Wes Craven and produced by Robert Shaye and New Line Cinema (1984). The film is Directed By: Nathan Thomas Milliner, Starring: Thomas Dunbar, Kevin Roach, Todd Reynolds, Steve Vessell, Eric Huskisson, Kharley Redmon and Corey Ballard. The film can be seen here via YouTube.
