The endless murders of American citizens by immigrants who entered the United States illegally have spurred serious examination of benefits of allowing ‘Sanctuary Cities’ between liberal and conservative ideologies throughout the nation. The House Committee on the Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) pointed the finger straight at President Obama. “As a result of the Obama administration’s foolish policies, hundreds of thousands of criminal aliens are currently roaming free in the United States.”
In just eight months of 2014, sanctuary cities “released over nine thousand individuals, who have either been arrested or convicted of serious crimes,” said U.S. House of Representative Lamar Smith (R-Texas) during a debate on new legislation this month.
Last week legislation passed the House of Representatives that would withhold some federal grants from states or locations that refuse to comply with federal immigration laws and efforts that threaten the safety of communities.
“Two thirds of those nine thousand individuals had either committed or been arrested for serious crimes,” Smith reported. “In just the few months since they were released, one quarter have committed other crimes. How many others are going to commit more crimes in the coming months, if one quarter have already committed other crimes?”
The Law for Sanctuary Cities Act (HR 3009) is intended to strengthen the enforcement of current federal law, called The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigration Responsibility Act written by Rep. Smith. Smith’s law made sure it was illegal for jurisdictions to withhold information on immigration status that would lead to deportation. The new act, introduced by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), passed by a vote of 241-179.
“This administration last year released 30,000 criminal aliens,” Smith quantified. “Two thousand under the Constitution they had to release; but 28,000 were released voluntarily by this administration. They committed the worst crimes imaginable, thousands of crimes. So if anything, you’ve got an administration setting the example for sanctuary cities rather than preventing sanctuary cities from trying to enforcing immigration laws.”
“Sanctuary city policies needlessly endanger American lives by refusing to honor the federal government’s authority to enforce immigration laws,” Goodlatte indicated. “Unfortunately, the Obama Administration’s own foolish policies enable rogue local governments to defy federal immigration laws. All too often, these reckless policies create preventable tragedies.”
“The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act made it illegal for these sanctuary jurisdictions to withhold information about immigration status that might lead to deportations,” Smith, chairman and founder of the House Border Security Caucus and former chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, stated. “Still, sanctuary cities have violated this law with the release of thousands of illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes. And the law also is routinely ignored and not enforced by this administration.”
