Saturday night, the New England Revolution battled D.C. United to a 1-1 draw in a fight for top Eastern Conference honors at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, for a crowd of 15,216, despite the home team finishing with nine men.
New England Revolution (5-3-5, 20 pts.) now stand second in the Eastern Conference and fifth across MLS. D.C. United (6-2-4, 22 pts.) hold the top spot in the East and also lead the league.
Charlie Davies put New England ahead 1-0 in first-half stoppage time, scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the season. But Chris Tierney and Lee Nguyen were both red carded early in the second half, forcing New England to play with nine men for the final 32 minutes. It was the only the third red card of Tierney’s career and the first for Nguyen.
DCU broke down the Revolution’s defense in the 80th minute when Jairo Arrieta collected a Taylor Kemp cross and foiled goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth with the game-tying 1-1 goal.
Head coach Jay Heaps started Shuttleworth, Andrew Farrell, Tierney, Teal Bunbury and Davies in place of Brad Knighton, Kevin Alston, Andy Dorman, Kelyn Rowe and Diego Fagundez. Dorman served a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. Daigo Kobayashi started on the bench, returning from hamstring and back injuries.
The Revolution next host the LA Galaxy on Sunday, May 31 at Gillette Stadium in a rematch of MLS Cup 2014. That game, broadcast on FOX Sports 1, will kick off at 7 p.m. It will also be carried on the radio in English on 98.5 The Sports Hub and SiriusXM FC Channel 94 and in Portuguese on WMVX 1570 AM Nossa Radio USA.
