If you hate lacing your running shoes, or you’re a triathlete looking for a quick transition into the run, Zubits magnetic shoe closures may be the answer.
Zubits feature two magnets that you lace into the top three eyelets of your running shoes. Once installed, you simply step into your shoes and snap the magnets together. To get out of your shoes, you can either step on the back of your heel and lift your foot up and forward, or you can twist the magnets to release them.
Speed: Because you no longer have to tie your laces, you can put your shoes on and be ready to step out the door in seconds. They are truly snap and go.
Strength: The magnets are incredibly strong. I took them out on the road, the trail and the track and they never came unsnapped. In fact, the magnets are so strong that you’ll want to make sure you keep your fingers clear when you’re snapping them together. And forget pulling them apart, unless you’re the Incredible Hulk. They won’t come undone without twisting the magnets.
Fit: Once you get the tightness of your laces adjusted properly (see below), they stay put. I ran in these for weeks and never had to readjust the fit.
Comfort: My shoes are as comfortable as they were with tied laces. I worried that the magnets might press or rub against the top of my foot, but I never had an issue.
Installation: They do have to be laced into your shoes, which is slightly tricky if you’re not good at following written directions. But, there is a handy video to help you out. Also, if your aglets are cracked or missing, buy a new pair of laces (or try taping the ends), otherwise you will never get them through the holes on the Zubits.
Adjusting the fit: Depending on how you lace the Zubits into your shoes, you can get anywhere from a super tight to an extremely loose fit, and you may have to experiment a little bit. It took me a couple of runs to figure out the right fit for me.
Overall, Zubits are one of my favorite new running gadgets of the year. At about 20 bucks a pair (depending on size), they’re a little pricey, but considering you can reuse them and the fact that you’ll never have to tie your shoes again, they’re well worth it.
Zubits are available online in a variety of colors.
