“Star Wars” is one of the biggest movie franchises ever created and LEGOs are one of the most famous and collectible toy lines on the market. Hence, when LEGO acquired the license to create sets based on the “Star Wars” series it opened the door to some of the most successful toy products to date. The union between LEGO and “Star Wars” has inspired many artists, photographer Vesa Lehtimaki among them.
In 2015, Vesa Lehtimaki released a book of photography titled “Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy” that showcases LEGO figures and sets in worlds and/or scenes directly inspired by the world and creatures that populate “Star Wars” films. Essentially, “Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy” is nothing short of a fascinating combination of LEGO, Star Wars and excellent photography. This large (12” by 10”) 176 page hardcover book consists of LEGO’s Star War models and characters presented and photographed by Vesa Lehtimaki, a well- known Finnish artist. Vesa’s imaginative photographs of his interpretation of scenes from the Star Wars planets of Tatooine, Hoth and Endor are sublime. The style and quality of the photographs makes the viewer wonder how they were created and, unlike many other publications, Vesa explains the thought process and techniques used to create many of them.
“Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy” should be welcomed by aficionados of LEGO, Star Wars and fine photography. This book will serve as an inspiration for those who wish to take photos of their favorite LEGO models and characters. All you need is an iPhone, baking powder, sand and an imagination! Published by DK, this 170+ page book retails for $24.99 and will captivate “Star Wars” fans of all ages.
