Mermaids are staple characters in the genre of fantasy. Long adored by little girls all over the world, a toy company known as Zuru has recently found a way to turn mermaid lore into fun via their robotic “Magical Mermaids.”
Zuru is an innovative toy company that distributes its ware sin over 80 countries. Their interest in new trends and progressive toys has led them to develop some very unique an interesting concepts. In the case of the Magical Mermaids, each figure is equipped with built-in micro-technology that enables the mermaid to seemingly come to life (aka move about as if she is swimming) the second she hits the water.
The Magical Mermaids are the most enchanting features in Zuru’s ongoing “Robo” line. Part toy, part nightlight, the Magical Mermaid playset consists of a circular tank and one mermaid. Three other mermaids–all sporting different color schemes–can be purchase separately and added to the tank. Once in the water, each mermaid has the ability to swim around in multiple directions with the help of a ringed-weight, or once the weight is taken off, backstroke their way around the water. Each mermaid comes with three weights which enable her to swim at one of three levels: the bottom of the tank, the middle of the tank, or the top of the tank.
Although the mermaids can operate in a bath, they look particularly charming in their “water wonderland” tank complete with coral and pink base with a sand-like finish. Moreover, the tank has the ability to light up and cycle through a rainbow of colors. Hence, this set can serve as a nightlight as well as a storage space for the mermaids. The inclusion of these vibrant LED lights transforms the water into an enchanting environment that is as relaxing as it is beautiful.
Each mermaid comes loaded with 2 button cell batteries and an additional 2 included in the packaging. Each one represents a different ocean which is a very nice touch. For example, Belle is the princess of the Arctic Ocean, Nadia is the princess of the Indian Ocean, Adrianna is the princess of the Atlantic Ocean and Lina is the princess of the Pacific Ocean. All four mermaids fit nicely in the tank together so the space will not appear too crowded even if you collect and add all four. Each one is well detailed and their intricate hair, eyes and jewelry are clearly defined when they are viewed from the magnifying effects of the filled tank. Additionally, if you have other Zuru products such as the Robo Turtle those toys can also swim around with the mermaids and each one of these toys can double as a bath toy (although they are not recommended for use in bubble baths, pools with chlorine or salt water lakes and/or oceans).
The playset/tank retails for $29.99 and comes with a tool that successfully helps take the mermaids out of the water. Each one of the additional mermaids cost $9.99. Hence, a full collection of the tank and all four mermaids will run about $60. That is an extremely reasonable price given that this product has multiple uses as a bath toy, a night light and a room decoration.
Overall, I give the “Magical Mermaids” line 5 out of 5 stars and strongly recommend it for little girls who are interested in fantasy characters, especially mermaids. To purchase the playset and/or additional mermaids, see here.
