“Denver, you are by far one of my favorite cities to play in!” Mandy Lee proclaimed after taking the stage at Denver’s Gothic Theater on Friday night, October 23, 2015 for a stop on the backend of their ‘Scrapbook Tour’. As the front lady for the infectious Indie sensations known as MisterWives, she commanded the energy of the theater from the moment the first pristine lyrical note left her lips.
The sold out show had fans shoulder to shoulder, dancing and, pressing as close as they could get to the stage. Before attending the show, I had read other reviews from their early performances throughout the headlining tour. The consistent theme seemed to be that, while the band portrayed great potential, their live set could be tightened. I walked through the doors of the Gothic with this scrutinizing filter in mind, but after their opening song, ‘Best I Can Do’, that opinion was utterly dispelled. MisterWives engaged the Mile High crowd immediately with energetic electricity, and a fair dose of wit, mixed with charm.
The band has allowed the touring experience this year to refine their already spirited set. In my opinion, there was nothing to criticize, at all. They came onstage and took charge, with pure talent and the sheer delight of sharing their music. It was an energy tangibly experienced by all, and only intensified as the crowd continued to connect to the spirit of their music throughout the performance.
At the end, Mandy Lee confessed, “I’m having a little too much fun,” as she wiped the corners of her eyes saying, “So much so, I’m crying a little.” The band posed for a ‘selfie’ with the Denver crowd, before concluding the time on stage with hit singles ‘Reflections’ followed by, ‘Our Own House’. As is to be expected the entire crowd sung along, and Mandy left the front mic for a drum solo at one point, displaying her multi-dimensional talent.
Obviously, upon leaving the stage, the demand for an encore was deafening. They returned to play a cover of Whitney Houston’s song “I Want To Dance With Somebody”, but not before Mandy made one more admission, “This is our best day on tour, so far.” I think I can fairly speak on behalf of those in attendance and say, MisterWives, Denver couldn’t agree more! Thank you for leaving it all on the stage for us.
If you have the opportunity to see this band perform for the remaining dates of this tour, don’t miss it! Pursue it. It’s not often you get to be a part of witnessing a genuinely talented band, blossom into international super stars!
