Review: Know Yourself

“Know Yourself” is a company that produces quality entertainment-educational content for kids between the ages of 7 and 12. The new “Know Yourself Adventure Series” is delivered monthly and contains a year’s worth of original comic books, science projects, historical lessons, and healthy recipes which are all designed to give children the information they need to learn about the vital systems of the body, while also bringing hours of productive entertainment to their families.

The 12-month-long adventure introduces a different system of the human body each month – starting with the five senses – and progressively builds on the previous month’s learning. Over the course of the year, kids will receive creative content that helps them explore the skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, digestive, immune systems, and more. Know Yourself’s full line of books, comics, and clothing weave together a compelling cast of characters with exciting, interactive curriculum designed to nurture young people’s inherent desire for wisdom and wellness and help them become fully versed in how their minds and bodies work – a process they call “self-literacy.”

The first offering in the Know Yourself series introduces readers to the characters and takes them along on an adventure to Ancient Greece. While the “skater slang” presented in the comic might be confusing to people unfamiliar with the jargon, the overall storyline is fast paced and exciting enough to keep kid’s interest. However, the true strength of this series are the numerous suggestions for real-life experiments that it offers.

Essentially, the series details a number of literally “hands-on” experiments that help children learn about science in a fun and playful way. The series also offers advice for simple recipes that are Greek-themed to match the theme of the episode/parcel. This is a great way to introduce children to new–and healthy foods–while also teaching them about the joys of preparing a meal. In short, Know Yourself helps kids learn about their bodies, history, culture and foods all in one simple package. The characters are interesting and the plots are fast-paced and action packed which will appeal to most kids sense of adventure. This series is an absolute must have for educators–including homeschooling parents–with emphasis on the excellent experiments.

The one true fault with the series is its expense, prices depend upon a subscription service that varies between $40 a box to $420 for an entire year’s worth of material. Considering the costs, this series would be best enjoyed by families/friends with numerous children who can enjoy the materials together. Overall, I give this series 4.5 out of 5 stars and look forward to seeing what the next episodes will offer. To learn more, visit the official website.
