A woman who led a solitary life, in the company of her beloved rescued dog, “Katie,” passed away unexpectedly just after the Fourth of July. Today, one of her friends is doing his utmost to honor the woman’s memory by finding Katie a new, loving owner.
Tom Short met Karen Hall in 2013 – he described Karen’s first encounter with the dog who would soon become her soul mate, “She had come to the Humane Society because a certain female Pittie named Katie had caught her eye. Now it happens that Karen was in her mid-sixties. She had been injured and walked with a pronounced limp, using a cane. We didn’t see a chance in the world Katie would work for her, because she was a “puller.” Karen was not to be dissuaded.”
Katie seemed to intuitively know that the woman holding the leash needed her to be a compliant walker; Short described what happened when the pair set out for their first walk together, “To the astonishment of those of us watching, Katie didn’t pull at all. She would walk to full leash extension then turn and look back.” Needless to say, Katie had found her new home.
Katie and Karen lived together in a meager home near Lake Chelan, Washington. Times were hard for Karen – she suffered an injury and her home lost its water system, forcing Karen to make treks to the lake to haul water. Short stated, “A proud woman, Karen would not accept either pity or help. Despair might have set in but for one thing. She had her wonderful dog Katie and the joy they brought to one another kept the devils away.”
Though life was not easy, Karen and Katie enjoyed special moments together – keeping one another company and sharing a deep and unconditional, loving bond. Sadly, the bond was severed when Katie was left behind when Karen passed away. Short and his wife had gone to her house to pay her a visit and they were met with silence after knocking at the door…he stated:
From a side window we could look into the living room and there in her chair sat Karen in gentle repose.
Katie still had food and water in her dish – apparently in good health, though likely mourning the loss of her special person. Short described his desire to help the now homeless dog find a new family, “Now I feel I have to answer to an unspoken pledge- to find Katie a good home.”
The courage of that woman and the beauty of her relationship deserves nothing less.
