The Sacramento Republic F.C. (10-8-3) and the Real Monarchs S.L.C. (2-13-6) battled to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Bonney Field. It was an important match for the Republic F.C. as they are fighting for their playoff lives and the chance to defend their USL Championship in the post season tournament. Real Monarchs seem to have their number as the first year club has frustrated them all season as they have a 1-0-2 record against them prior to Saturday night’s match. Sacramento scored their only goal of the match in the sixty-seventh minute when Justin Braun punched one in past the outstretched hands of Real Monarchs goalie Eduardo Fernandez.
Saturday night at Bonney Field has become a staple for soccer fans in the capitol city as another sellout crowd greeted the hometown club. The match was delayed for several minutes due to a brief power outage involving the stadium lights and scoreboard. Sacramento and the Real Monarchs came out to play in what would the final time of the 2015 USL Season. As advertised, this would be a defensive battle and neither club did not manage to disappoint.
The first half ended in a 0-0 draw as Sacramento and the Real Monarchs were shut out of the net by their defense and respective goalies Patrick McLain and Eduardo Fernandez. By great defensive skill, goalie play and sheer luck, the Real Monarchs kept the Republic F.C. from scoring despite being peppered with shots in the first forty-five minutes of play. The second half started off like a replay until the Republic F.C. finally managed to punch one in the sixty-seventh minute giving them a 1-0 lead. With only twenty-three minutes left in game play, the Real Monarchs rallied the troops and began to attack Sacramento’s net looking to score an equalizer.
Instead by playing defensively, the Republic F.C. played too loosely and paid for it in the eighty-six minute when Real Monarch’s Lucas Baldin broke free and scored easily on his one-on-one opportunity against Patrick McLain tying the game at 1-1. With only four minutes left to play in regulation plus an additional five minute extra time, neither club was able to score ending the match in a draw. Sacramento now sits on the outside looking in of the playoffs with a total of thirty-four points, two behind the Tulsa Roughnecks and the Orange County Blues. Five games are left in the 2015 USL regular season and the Republic F.C. will meet the Roughnecks next week at Bonney Field on August 29th.
