The Priv by BlackBerry has been out for about a week now, and the Internet is already starting to buzz with rumors of a follow up from the Canadian company. Crackberry got their hands on a few renders of what is being called the “BlackBerry Vienna.”
The phone is very similar to the Priv in that it has a physical keyboard, but with one major change: it’s not a slider.
The Priv has been receiving some pretty good reviews from different media outlets, which is always good news for BlackBerry, and it seems as though the company isn’t ready to give up the physical keyboard just yet. Most people automatically associate BlackBerry for two things: security and physical keyboards. It’s a viable strategy for them to continue making devices that have both of those distinguishing features. This is the best way to separate them from the teeming masses of other OEM Android devices.
Let’s take a moment to look at what we’ve got here. The device seems to be pretty tall, seeing as it accommodates to a full touchscreen and physical keyboard. It has sharp corners on the top and rounded corners on the bottom and comes in four different colors. The physical keyboard has four rows, even though it would probably work better with the three-row keyboard seen on the BlackBerry Passport. This would help with it’s incredible height.
Speaking of its height, chances are the Vienna will measure the same as the Priv when it is slid up. Most reviewers have not had a problem with that, and have even been pleasantly surprised with how the phone feels in your hands. That means that even though this device has some inches on it, that won’t mean it will feel clunky and awkward when you hold it.
Of course, these pictures are only renders of a device that could possibly exist, and even if it does, there’s no word on when it could ever reach store shelves. That means for now all we can do is speculate on what exactly it will be able to do or what could be featured under the hood. Chances are its probable release date will effect what’s under the hood. BlackBerry likes to pack their phones with guts that will make users happy, while not exactly blowing them away. You can most likely expect the Vienna to do the same.
The deciding factor on whether or not this phone will hit the market will be the Priv. While the reviews have been mostly positive, and Amazon even sold out of the phone when they initially made it available, it’s still too early in the game to know if it will be a success. BlackBerry CEO, John Chen, has stated in the past that he wouldn’t be opposed to breaking away from the hardware department if it proves to be unprofitable. In fact, he’s even gone as far as to say that he would like to see 5 million devices sold in a year to prove that there’s still money to be made.
As for right now, all we can do is wait and see if any more details will surface on the BlackBerry Vienna while we get used to having Android on our Priv by BlackBerry.
What are your thoughts on these renders? I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
