Friday’s attacks by the religious terror organization of Islamic State across Paris, France exhibit one thing all of the “revealed”/hearsay religions have in common: cruelty.
Islam’s “holiest” book, the Quran has many calls to cruel religious violence. For example, Surah 8:12-13 instructs, “When thy Lord inspired the angels, (saying): I am with you. So make those who believe stand firm. I will throw fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Then smite the necks and smite of them each finger. That is because they opposed Allah and His messenger. Whoso opposeth Allah and His messenger, (for him) lo! Allah is severe in punishment.” There are many other examples of calls to religious violence and cruelty in the Quran. For politicians like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Jeb Bush to claim Islam is a religion of peace and the IS religious terrorists have somehow hijacked it is a lie.
The reason I used the word “holiest” instead of “holy” in reference to the Quran is because Islam teaches that the Torah (the first five books of the brutal and ungodly Hebrew Bible/Old Testament), Psalms and the gospels of the New Testament are all part of God’s revelation to man. They believe parts of the revelation, however, became corrupted and that is why God gave the revelation of the Quran to Mohammed, to correct the corruption of the previous revelations. This makes clear the truth to this statement by Thomas Paine in The Age of Reason: “Revelation then, so far as the term has relation between God and man, can only be applied to something which God reveals of his will to man; but though the power of the Almighty to make such a communication is necessarily admitted, because to that power all things are possible, yet the thing so revealed (if anything ever was revealed, and which, bye the bye, it is impossible to prove), is revelation to the person only to whom it is made. His account of it to another person is not revelation; and whoever puts faith in that account, puts it in the man from whom the account comes; and that man may have been deceived, or may have dreamed it, or he may be an impostor and may lie. There is no possible criterion whereby to judge of the truth of what he tells, for even the morality of it would be no proof of revelation. In all such cases the proper answer would be, ‘When it is revealed to me, I will believe it to be a revelation; but it is not, and cannot be incumbent upon me to believe it to be revelation before; neither is it proper that I should take the word of a man as the word of God, and put man in the place of God.'”
As Deists and anyone who objectively reads the “holy” book of Judaism, the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, knows, it is overflowing with brutality and cruelty. It stands to reason that any “revealed”/hearsay religion that sees the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament as being a revelation from God will also promote religious violence and cruelty in any “holy” books it comes up with. That has been the case with Christianity, Islam and Mormonism. They all have roots in Judaism and its Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, and they all have calls to religious violence which they have practiced whenever they were/are able to get away with it.
All of these “revealed”/hearsay religions are known as Abrahamic because they all claim Abraham as their patriarch. I remember when I was a Christian back in the 1970s singing the song Father Abraham. The version we sang had the words, “Just like father Abraham!” When we stop and realize what a despicable person Abraham was, no one in their right mind would ever want to be anything like him. He heard voices telling him to kill his son. He was going to go through with the murder when he heard another voice telling him not to. His image of God was so terrible he believed God would command him to kill his son just to see if he feared God enough to actually do it (Genesis 22:12)! Add to this Abraham’s two counts of pimping his wife (Genesis 12:10-16 and Genesis 20:2-18) and it’s easy to see why Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Mormonism are so ungodly, twisted and cruel with a patriarch like Abraham.
Judaism did not teach about an afterlife until after the Romans sacked Jerusalem and destroyed the Jewish temple in 70 CE. The Roman victory let it be known that Israel/Judea would not even exist, let alone rule the world as the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament promised Jews. Cruelty towards Gentile people would be the rule in a Jewish dominated world as promised the Jews in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. For example, Jews would be allowed to own as slaves Gentile people and their children “for ever” (Leviticus 25:44-46) and any Gentile nation that would not serve the Jewish state of Israel would be destroyed and “utterly wasted” (Isaiah 60:12). The Roman victory caused the Jewish clergy to start to focus their followers on an afterlife. Rabbi Ya’akov seems to be the first clergyman of Judaism to promote the idea of “the World to Come.”
The Abrahamic “revealed”/hearsay religions of Christianity and Islam promoted an idea of an afterlife from their earliest beginnings. Cruelty is inseparable from their teachings on an afterlife. Each claimed that if a person did not belong to their religion, God would burn them for eternity in hell. This is eternal cruelty on the part of God. They also taught from the start that people who did join their cult/religion would have rewards in the here and now as well as for eternity in heaven/paradise.
The “revealed”/hearsay religions and their cruelty must be stopped. If they are not eliminated, religious violence will go on without end. Thomas Paine made this clear when he wrote in The Age of Reason: “It is incumbent on every man who reverences the character of the Creator, and who wishes to lessen the catalogue of artificial miseries, and remove the cause that has sown persecutions thick among mankind, to expel all ideas of revealed religion, as a dangerous heresy and an impious fraud. What is it that we have learned from this pretended thing called revealed religion? Nothing that is useful to man, and everything that is dishonorable to his Maker. What is it the Bible teaches us?- rapine, cruelty, and murder. What is it the Testament teaches us?- to believe that the Almighty committed debauchery with a woman engaged to be married, and the belief of this debauchery is called faith.” Paine’s points in this quote regarding the cruelty promoted by the “revealed”/hearsay religions and the need for us to eliminate them apply not only to Judaism and Christianity, but also to Islam.
