Square Enix has received an earful of complaints regarding the performance of the Mac version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. The feedback included various problems that the Mac users have encountered with the game. As a result, Square Enix is temporarily halting the sale of the game and offering refunds to those who request it.
Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn‘s director and producer, Naoki Yoshida, wrote an apology on the game’s forums. Yoshida believes that the problem occurred when the wrong system requirements for the Mac version of the game were released. The significant discrepancy between the performance of the game that was actually released and the expectations the customers had for it was said to be due to the lack of information available on the game, as well as other issues.
Yoshida elaborated that the team was working on improving the client’s performance. The system requirements, that are usually made available to the public before a game’s release, were not available in time, due to these improvements.
Although our development and QA teams tested the client on Mac hardware, because of our last minute efforts to improve performance and the possibility that system requirements might change, we decided to prepare several versions of these requirements, with the one to be released depending on the final result. However, in the chaos leading up to the multi-platform launch of our expansion, we released incorrect requirements, which were not updated prior to the Mac version’s official release.
While the development and operations teams, as well as our entire company, were involved in this mistake, it was I who ultimately made the decision to release the Mac version under these circumstances and therefore bear sole responsibility, and I sincerely apologize to you all.
Because of the expressed situation, he stated that many users’ Mac hardware could not run at even the minimum system requirements, which has resulted in insufficient performance and left many users dissatisfied and contacting the company. “Had we provided accurate information beforehand, I know many of you would not have purchased the Mac version, which is why we decided to offer full refunds, “Yoshida continued, “Once again, I apologize.”
While the procedure to obtain a full refund of the game may vary, depending on the retailer, Yoshida advises those seeking the refund to contact the store or website from which the game was purchased.
