It has been one week since the disappointing 2015 Video Music Awards, yet the images still dwell in the minds of viewers (some more painful than others). Most of the original MTV generation wondered what happened to music, with the younger Pink proclaiming her disappointment via Instagram. Rebuttals asserted the critics are just too old, however this year’s VMAs lacked a social conscience, unless of course you plan to vote Kanye 2020. Regardless, it is hard to argue with some of the stunning beauty that walked the red carpet at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on August 30, including Rita Ora and the acclaimed Tori Kelly. The celebrity stylists responsible for the VMAs hairstyles detailed how to recreate the looks, using hair care from Matrix, which is detailed below.
Rita Ora, 24, wore a custom Vera Wang low-cut, feathery black dress, accented with crisscross straps. Her red carpet VMAs style was accented with Stuart Weitzman shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Chris Appleton for Matrix was inspired by the “paneling on her dress to create an overall look that was cohesive.”
Before the “Poison” singer’s hair was styled for the MTV Video Music Awards, Appleton first returned Ora’s hair color to platinum with Matrix SoColor. Rita has a naturally curly texture; therefore her hair was prepped with Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner Anti Frizz Leave in Treatment. Chris avoided volumizing products or anything that added “dry texture” to keep her VMA look “smooth and sleek.”
Rita Ora’s VMA stylist combined Matrix StyleLink Smooth Setter Smoothing Cream and Matrix Stylelink Turbo Dryer, and then blew it dry with a flat brush. Her hair was divided into “clean, even sections using Matrix StyleLink Shape Switcher, tying off each one.”
Six ponytails were crafted, and then interconnected, applying Matrix StyleLink Heat Buffer, before using the flat iron to smooth the rest. Matrix StyleLink Style Fixer was applied for an enduring hold.
Nikki Providence was the mastermind behind Tori Kelly’s bounce at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards. According to the Matrix celebrity stylist, “Tori is blessed with lots of beautiful naturally curly hair. When you have curly hair, the most important thing is to keep it healthy and use products that support the natural texture.”
The 22-year-old “Nobody Love” singer wore a sexy Vatanika black short jumpsuit with long sleeves, accessorized by a Jimmy Choo clutch and Nicholas Kirkwood shoes. Her natural curls complemented the VMAs ensemble perfectly. To get the curls ready for the red carpet, Tori Kelly’s hair was first washed with Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner, ideal to cleanse without stripping the hair of essential oils.
Matrix StyleLink Volume Builder was then applied to wet hair at the roots. A good amount of Matrix StyleLink Smooth Setter, combined with a few drops of Matrix StyleLink Volume Booster, was also added to the roots, and then worked throughout the mid lengths, distributing evenly.
A deep part was made on the top of Tori Kelly’s hair, and then two-inch sections of hair were twisted into ropes. Each section was gently and completely dried with a diffuser. It is important to not disturb the twists while drying says Nikki.
Providence used her hands to “shake the hair out at the roots to boost volume and separate the curls slightly.” Touch-ups were used with a medium-sized curling iron. But, it is important to keep “the natural movement in the hair and not make every section uniform.” A touch of volume was added at the roots with Matrix StyleLink Height Riser, and Matrix StyleLink Volume Fixer provided the finishing touch for Tori Kelly’s VMA performance.
