Models live glamorous lives, meet A-list celebrities and sometimes date and marry A-list celebrities, and, they make tons of money. Right? Well, sort of… The majority of models do not live this lifestyle or even come close to it. Many have to take second jobs to support their modeling careers, and, most date and marry “normal” people. And, while on the outside, it appears models have everything, take a few things into consideration before deciding to plunge into the modeling world.
People will assume you are stupid
For whatever reason models are usually labeled “stupid” and for the most part, nothing could be further from the truth. Most models are well within normal or above range of intelligence, and, in some cases, such as Cindy Crawford, well above average intelligence. The reason models are often labeled stupid is because all people see are two dimensional photos without ever speaking to a model. It’s also a defense mechanism to “humanize” what current society deems as beautiful and unapproachable to the average person. In turn, this only demonstrates the lack of intelligence of the general population.
You’re only using modeling to get into acting
There is some truth to this statement. Many models do pursue acting after their modeling career comes to an end, mainly because it is a logical progression. However, being a model doesn’t automatically guarantee you’ll be a successful actress or actor. If you are getting into modeling with the sole purpose of breaking into acting, you are better off simply pursuing acting.
Your private life becomes public amusement
For many models fame isn’t always a plus side of modeling. Every heart-break, health problem or financial difficulty is reported in tabloids as if it is entertainment and that you are a non-person. If you reach supermodel status, then be prepared to share every intimate detail of your private life with the entire world.
Unsolicited offers of dates and marriage
Models also receive tons of offers to date and marry, but, most times the offers come from people you may consider less than desirable. Since the person doesn’t know you (and they only know your photographs), they will project their likes as your likes. For example, if a man loves fishing and camping, then you love fishing and camping (when in truth, you hate it and would never do either of those things.)
Be ready to be on a constant diet
Weight is the enemy in the fashion world, and, even 2 or 3 pounds can make a difference. Your life will revolve around calories and exercise. Say goodbye to french fries and chocolate, and, hello to endless salads and other low calorie foods and endless hours of sweating at the gym or with your personal trainer.
