Those who refuse to be in subjection to Jehovah God come in every kind of description. Let us attempt to analyze some of those reasons and try to see why they arrive at their position.
Atheist: The true atheist forthrightly states there is no God. The term itself means no God’ or without God’. They are adamant. In other words, they don’t simply think’ there is no God, but profess to know there is no God. This is a fallacious stand because there is no possible way they can be positive of that. In order to be able to state anything so radically, one would have to know everything there is to be known. If not, the very thing he did not know, might be proof that God exists.
One of the most famous atheists who ever lived was Carl Sagan. He made this statement, “The Cosmos is all there is, or ever was, or ever will be.” How on earth did he know that? The problem is, he didn’t know that and didn’t even have a clue as to how the Cosmos came to be in existence. Such an unverified and unverifiable statement is proof of the foolishness of their stand.
Agnostic: This term means ‘without knowledge’. So the agnostic is simply saying he does not know whether God exists or doesn’t. He contends there is insufficient evidence to prove that God is or isn’t. He cannot know, you cannot know, no one else can know. He is positive of his stand. Here again, unless he knows everything there is to know, his stand is fallacious. The very things he does not know may well be those things which prove beyond doubt that there is a God or there is no God.
Skeptic: The skeptic takes a stand not so adamant nor arrogant. He simply admits that he does not know whether God exists or not but does not deny there may be evidence one way or another of which he is not aware. This person is lost as well as the others because one has to have faith to be pleasing to God.
Infidel: The infidel believes as the atheist, and in fact, is one. But his approach is not only does he deny God exists but is intolerant of those who do. The infidel
busies himself attacking God and ridiculing those who accept Him. They revile the Bible and God and any who accepts them.
Causes: Why do these people take their stands? The underlying reasons are myriad and elusive. It would be difficult to try and identify any one individual’s purpose or cause for the stand they take. There are numerous things that may influence one’s arriving at his position. These types of belief, as are religious ones, are not inherited traits. Although some scholars have come to the conclusion that man has a natural inclination to worship something, even if it is only himself, or money, or some inanimate object. The choices he makes in this direction are his own.
It is thought by many scholars in psychiatry and human behavior that many choose to be unbelievers of God is, because he likes it that way. He is free from religious restraints therefore, his mind is set to reject any evidence that might move him from his position of unbelief. Often, those who have begun to disassociate themselves from the God of the Bible, become so biased against them, they become repugnant and actually hated by the individuals. They prefer to die in their sins than to obey God.
“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” (Romans 1:21-26 KJV) Here, the apostle Paul warns of what one decides to convince himself and the consequences that he might expect.
There are many other things which influence how one comes to believe one thing or another. Parents, as might be expected, have great influence on their children, though not always as they might desire. Many children, who respect and love their parents, have an instinctive desire to pattern themselves after them. While others, whose relationships with their parents were not as they should have been, may actually reject the things their parents did, rather than pattern themselves by them.
Devoutly religious parents, depending upon their approach towards their children, may successfully get them to follow in their steps. But where resentment is built, or hypocrisy towards their religion is obvious, it may actually turn the child against that particular lifestyle. So unbelievers have developed from unbelieving parents at times, while they may have also developed from some overly insistent, though avid Christian parents.
Parents may influence children one way or another, but outside influences can sway them in the other direction. Our schools are filled with atheistic teachers who are able to lead astray many young people who are not thoroughly familiar with the teachings of the Holy Bible.
But ultimately, it is the individual who decides his fate, whether it be good or bad. God created us to be free to follow Him or not, as we choose. But He gave us fair warning of the consequences.
People who are honest with themselves, know that they are unable to prove there is no God. They know that the Holy Bible is completely inerrant since they have never been able to prove a single mistake as the books were written in the original. In fact, those books prove themselves beyond the shadow of a doubt to be true.
