Last month, Volcom launched a new lineup of jeans as part of its “Real Life Happening” campaign. According to the company, this collection is all about timeless style, streamlined utility, and quality materials. This month, we take a look at an example plucked right from the middle of this new collection, the Solver modern straight fit jeans from Volcom, to see what all the hubbub is about.
For most of us, jeans are a part of everyday life. For the rest of us, jeans at least make an appearance on the weekends when it is time to clean out the gutters, or some such. While the Volcom Solver jeans could easily fit just about anywhere denim is welcome, the fit and finish is just so nice that it seems silly to relegate these pants to grunt work.
While I can’t vouch for all the other jeans in this collection, I can vouch for the Solver. With a regular rise and a 16” leg opening, these “modern straight fit” jeans fit much better than expected. To be honest, all the verbiage about the rise and fit and leg opening had me a little nervous. I thought they might be a bit too modern for a middle-aged man, but the Solver is a really good all-rounder. Young men are sure to sag them and everyone else will wear them around the waist because they ride there naturally and comfortably.
The denim of this particular pair of Solvers is of the middleweight raw variety (8 denim styles total). Instead of 100% cotton, Volcom has gone the smart route by blending 1% elastane in with the cotton to add just a smidge of stretch to the fabric. After wearing the Solver for a while it starts to become apparent that the reason they are so likeable is due to the perfect fit that doesn’t let you down whether crouched down in the soup isle of the local grocery store or while flailing through a kickflip body varial over the hip at the local park.
Beyond the fit, the Solver is one good looking and well appointed pant. The dual finish buckle button and zippers is a nice touch as is the clean finished pocket bags and tonal embroidered Volcom Stone on the lower leg. To round out the look, Volcom includes its signature V belt loop up front and the backside features a new brand patch. My favorite feature of the Solver is the super subtle phone pocket which is part of the front left pocket assembly. There’s plenty of room for my HTC One M9, so it should easily fit most smartphones out there these days.
