The Baltimore Ravens headed into the bye week with uncertainty at the wide receiver position. The acquisition of Joe Morgan and Chuck Jacobs is an attempt to ease the uncertainty. The Ravens signed the two receivers in order to replace Steve Smith Sr., who was injured with his Achilles tear. According to the team’s official site, the Ravens signed Morgan and Jacobs Wednesday Morning. The Ravens move Morgan to Smith’s spot on the roster as the 35 year old wide receiver is being placed on injured reserve. Morgan and Jacobs’ acquisition means cutting tight end Konrad Reuland from the practice squad in order to make space.
According to BaltimoreRavens.com, Morgan, 27, comes from the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted rookie out of Walsh in 2011. In his time with the Saints he gained 471 yards with 14 catches and three touchdowns. Morgan’s biggest attribute is speed and the Ravens experienced his talents first hand last year on Monday Night Football. Morgan finished with 62 yards and one rushing attempt for 67 yards in the Ravens’ 34-27 win over the Saints. Chuck Jacobs was on the practice squad in 2013, but spent last season on injured reserve. Jacobs, 25, suffered a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament in the first preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The acquisition of Morgan and Jacobs means that there are now seven wide receivers on the Ravens’ 53-man roster: Marlon Brown, Chris Givens, Jeremy Ross, Breshad Perriman and Morgan. That also includes Daniel Brown on the practice squad. The Ravens biggest issue in the wide receiver depth is injuries. Via the Baltimore Sun, Michael Campanaro, Darren Waller, and Cam Worthy are all on injured reserve with Smith Sr. being the latest addition.
The Ravens’ receivers besides Smith Sr. have shown sub-par numbers in the first half. In addition, the receiving core combined 53 catches for 633 yards and two touchdowns. Smith’s numbers totaled for 670 yards and three touchdowns by himself.Smith’s loss is devastating to the Ravens’ offensive schemes. “It’s tough to say how you handle it. It’s a tough loss, obviously,” Flacco said via Ravens’ team website.. His absence means another situation where Flacco will have to deal with a revolving door of of wide receivers this season. Team’s official website mentioned that Flacco expressed confidence moving forward with these new receivers. The overall theme for this team is next man up. Flacco said “I think everybody has done a great job of filling in,” Flacco said. “And in that game, we didn’t have a bad day,we were able to be pretty productive.”
The Ravens also tried out Hakeem Nicks, the former Colt and Gaint wide out. The Ravens said that they will pass on signing him for the time being according to Jeff Zebiec via The Baltimore Sun. The bye week is coming at the perfect time for this team. At 2-6 the Ravens feel like their past win against the Chargers is the catalyst for heading in the right direction. Coach Harbaugh said that the team practiced well today and will be leaving to spend time with their families during their bye week starting this coming Thursday.
