Nicki Minaj announced today (Tuesday, September 29) that she is set to star in a scripted comedy series on ABC Family. According to Deadline, the rapper has secured a series commitment with the family network.
The “Anaconda” rapper sparked interest in the impending news with a #NickiSurpirse hashtag that quickly trended on Twitter. As promised she announced around noon today that she has inked a deal with ABC Family to executive produce and star in a new show based on her life. This is Minaj’s first TV series but not her first time acting in front of the camera. She made her acting debut in a voice role for Ice Age: Continental Drift and starred alongside Cameron Diaz in The Other Woman.
For the still untitled comedy series, the focus will be on Nicki Minaj’s young life growing up in Queens, New York during the 1990s. Nicki Minaj isn’t the first rapper to go from music to TV and is in good company. Other rappers that have made successful transitions into TV and movie include Will Smith, Queen Latifah, and LL Cool J to name a few.
Kate Angelo, a writer who was one of the minds behind Will & Grace and The Bernie Mac Show, is confirmed as the writer of Nicki’s new series.The pilot for the series will begin filming in Queens this winter with the hope of continuing as a series.
