Forecast discussion: We started the day with bright sunshine and blue skies. However, Providence has seen threatening clouds by the early afternoon. At the moment, a cold front coming down from Northern New England has created a line of showers and thunderstorms now coming south into Worcester. We will continue to see this activity through the evening hours. Some thunderstorms may be accompanied with lightning, small hail, and gusty winds.
The thunderstorms will dissipate after sunset, but showers will persist until about 3 a.m. Weak high pressure ridging will bring back sunshine for Saturday morning, but a cold front coming from the central U.S. will bring showers back into the forecast by early Sunday morning. The front will stall over us for Sunday, so we can expect scattered showers throughout the day. It will not be a total washout, but you may want to keep a poncho or umbrella handy if you are at an outdoor activity or event.
The front will finally move offshore by Monday morning, so we will see the last raindrop before mid-morning. From there, a weak high pressure ridge will give us dry weather. Meanwhile, in the upper levels of the atmosphere, an upper level ridge will move over the eastern U.S. by Monday night. This will help tropical and warmer air to move back into Southern New England. The heat and humidity returns by Tuesday, and there is decent chance of having our first heat wave of the summer. A heat wave is defined as having three straight days of 90 degree or more temperatures.
We will not see any precipitation until Thursday, as a weak disturbance brings us the chance to create some passing showers and thunderstorms. The first chance will be in the early morning, with an approaching cold front by Thursday evening. The front will move offshore by late Friday afternoon, with the chance at seeing a little sunshine before sunset. It will remain hot and humid as we enter the following weekend.
