There are a lot of iPhone cases out there — different colors, different designs and shapes and varied prices — but they all purport to protect the exterior from damage. What the majority of the cases don’t do is allow the inherent beauty of the iPhone to stay in sight, and for those who have adopted the Rose Gold color as a mantra, hiding it away in a case isn’t going to be done even at the cost of a possible injury. Fortunately ROKFORM gets that but doesn’t baby anyone looking for a case to protect their iPhone 6 or 6S or 6 Plus or 6S Plus. Called the Predator (full name, the Predator Case for iPhone 6/6S or Predator Case for iPhone 6/6S Plus), this case provides a protective aura without enclosing the whole phone and sealing off its design. That’s pretty impressive for something that weighs in at less than 2 ounces.
The Predator is machined from aircraft grade aluminum and comes in 3 colors, but the black and silver are boring so go with the gun-metal because it has a more unassuming look to it that still grabs attention. Predator grabs and goes onto the back of the iPhone in a sort of octopus-grabbing design that grips all four corners and pushes the front bezel of the phone away from any surface it is placed against face down. That this “case” is lightweight but sturdy is inherent in the design, and great care has been taken to create a gripping style that will not mar the phone’s surface corners when applied. It takes maybe 30 seconds to put in on, with a few used to wipe off the phone with a microfibre cloth first maybe.
Once the Predator is attached, gripping the phone will bring the hand into contact and provide the tactile fact that there’s a definite contact between the two — ROKFORM calls it an anti-slip grip but regardless of name it does make for a safer handling even if one’s hand is a bit sweaty. The Predator’s back has something unique integrated into it: a magnet is part of the design and so can be used with other ROKFORM accessories that work with it as well as allowing for placement on any metallic flat surface. A disc to use for this purpose is also included with the Predator — the disc has a sticky back for adhering to surfaces (such as a car’s dashboard) and so the Predator’s magnet has something to stick onto that can be of your choosing. Doing this is an acquired taste, but ROKFORM is to be commended for thinking outside the box when it comes to their case’s functionality. It should also be mentioned, although it should also be obvious, that the magnet is such as to not interfere with any of the phone’s radio frequency aspects, such as WiFI or Bluetooth or any apps. And yes it is also credit card safe and doesn’t muck up Apple Pay use.
Speaking of accessories, you can get the iPhone Docking Station – Predator to use with the Predator case. This docking/charging station comes in three colors (silver, orange/gray, black) and holds the iPhone in the Predator case upright vertically and allows for a Lightning cable to be attached at the bottom for charging and syncing uses. The iPhone is secured inside using a simple locking knob mechanism that can accommodate most ROKFORM cases besides the Predator, and holds onto whatever surface its placed on through four suction cups. It’s a unique shape to break up the boredom and retails for $99.00.
Additionally, ROKFORM has added a special, exclusive case based around the Autotrader/Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX rider Justin Barcia. Printed directly on the case, the action shot utilizes an innovative UV printing process. It retails for $49.99 for the iPhone 6/S and $59.99 for the iPhone 6/6S Plus.
The Predator cases provides protection for an iPhone in those areas where danger beckons, and adds a wide range of mounting option uses for an iPhone 6/6S or 6/6S Plus where other cases do not. But it’s the fact that its design obviates the need to completely cover the iPhone that really gets the high-five. And is easily worth the $119.00 retail cost.
