DeJuana Ponton-Artis is a faithful member of New Canaan Worship Center in Richmond, Virginia where the pastors are Rev. Louis R. Blakey, Jr. and Rev. Lois Blakey-Paige. The pastor-emeritus is Rev. Louis R. Blakey, Sr. who founded the church 41 years ago.
The 39-year-old was born in Ahoskie, North Carolina, but her parents moved to Richmond when she was three months old. DeJuana said, “I am anxiously approaching my 40th birthday on Jan. 6.” DeJuana started attending New Canaan when she was around six years old. She was baptized and became a member at the early age of 10.
DeJuana is a member of the Fellowship Choir and serves as the Communicator for the Music Ministry. Her role is to disseminate information to other choirs and the musicians. She co-directs the youth choir, known as CLAY (Canaan Land Anointed Youth). She is an anointed dancer with the Praise Priest Ministry and serves as one of its leaders. If that’s not enough, she also serves with the Children and Youth Ministry and the Family and Friends Day Committee.
Once or twice a year, DeJuana coordinates fellowship activities for the church in the community such as the movies, plays and other events. Her roles in the church reflect her passion for helping others and working with children and youth. Praise and worship is an integral part of her daily life. She and her children have their own praise and worship at home.
DeJuana works for Intercept Youth Services as the Director of Operations for Community Homes. She has been with the organization for 11 years and has held a few positions. In her current role, she ensures that houses are in compliance with licensing and Medicaid regulations. She provides quality service to the youth and makes sure the staff is adequately trained.
DeJuana has been married to Michael, 40, for 11 years, and they have three beautiful children. Robert Michael, 14, is named after his father and late grandfather who died in 2000. Robert is in the ninth grade. Michae’ Troi, 12, is in the seventh grade, and Michaela Ravyn is a brilliant eight-year-old second grader. All three children are active in New Canaan. The girls are a part of CLAY and the Praise Priests. Robert plays the drums every Sunday during the offering period, and he is a youth usher.
Anyone who knows DeJuana knows that she loves her family a lot, and she looks forward to family gatherings. Her mother, Deaconess Ernestine Ponton-Gay, step-father, Harry Gay, and sister Robveda Ponton-Robinson are also members of New Canaan. The very active and creative member says,”In my spare time, I love to read and shop.” She has a small business making gift baskets.
