A Michigan professor with a fondness for teen boys was arrested and now faces multiple federal criminal charges after traveling over 1,000 miles to meet up with a potential 14-year-old male lover. But instead of a sickening sexual encounter, the 51-year-old man hooked up with the actual person on the other end of the luring online chats – a Florida law enforcement with the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force.
Writes the Sun Sentinel on Aug. 11: “Federal prosecutors said James Cavalcoli thought he had arranged to meet a Broward dad who was willing to let him have sex with the man’s 14-year-old son. The ‘dad’ was actually a Florida Department of Law Enforcement officer… The officer said he began communicating with a ‘Jim’ on a website that catered to men discussing fetishes, child pornography and sexual activity with young boys around Thanksgiving in 2013.
Cavalcoli, an assistant professor of computational medicine and bioinformatics at the University of Michigan, flew over 1,300 miles for his sexual encounter, but only found FBI officials waiting to arrest him at the rendezvous point. Over the course of a year and a half, Cavalcoli allegedly sent dozens of sexually explicit photos of himself to the dad and the fictitious 14-year-old.
On his profile, Cavalcoli wrote that he was “a fellow BL (boy lover), just don’t have my own. Wanted to chat and share stories and experiences — if you’re interested.” In July, he posted a message, advising he was traveling to Florida and asked if there were “any sons or Dads in that area that want to meet up for fun?”
The officer replied, ensnaring Cavalcoli by agreeing to hand over his teenage boy for sex, as long as James used a condom and “caused no pain.” To that, Cavalcoli praised the father. “I’m glad you’re looking out for your boy!” Jim allegedly wrote, according to a police affidavit.
Cavalcoli, equal parts anxious and eager over their upcoming meeting, wrote: “I’m excited and nervous. Can you do me a favor and reassure me you aren’t police or FBI affiliated. It would also be good to meet you before going to your room ok? I know this sounds strange, this is my first time meeting. So just nervous and cautious, ok??”
When Cavalcoli showed up in Weston, Florida, he was placed under arrest and charged with “traveling to have illicit sex with a minor.” Officials said he had condoms and lubricant in his possession.
Adds NBC Miami: “Investigators said Cavalcoli was in possession of multiple digital devices, including a personal laptop at the time of the arrest. Those items were confiscated as evidence and are undergoing forensic examination.”
Professor Cavalcoli was booked into the Broward County Jail and will be sent to Federal Court in Fort Lauderdale to be arraigned for his teen “boy love” charges.
