He’s known for his work as a producer with Brandy Clark, Jerrod Niemann and Jamey Johnson among several others, and earlier on as a touring musician and songwriter, but now Grammy-nominated Dave Brainard has been making headlines for an unprovoked attack on himself and two female friends, that has left him hospitalized and awaiting surgery.
Brainard was with his friends, who include Deborah DeLoach, in the early hours of Sunday morning (September 27) when the three used the crosswalk at Demonbreun Street in Nashville. According to a report in The Tennessean, as they were crossing in front of the 1505 Demonbreun apartment building, a gray or charcoal four-door Infiniti struck DeLoach, before continuing to drive into them slowly. More bizarrely, the female passenger then got out of the car and began to attack DeLoach, and soon the male driver had left the vehicle and begun beating and choking Brainard into unconsciousness. Turning to DeLoach, the driver then hit her and choked her by kneeing her in the throat.
“We couldn’t get out of the street because they kept hitting us,” DeLoach stated. As a result of the attack, Brainard was rushed to the emergency room. “His jaw on both sides is broken,” said DeLoach, who seems not to have been hospitalized. “He has lacerations on his chin and lip. His teeth are shattered in the back. He’s going to make it, but he is not doing well and has severe injuries to his face.” Nate Rau, the reporter who wrote the initial story, iterated in the article and on Twitter that Brainard’s reconstructive face surgery is scheduled for today (September 29). He is expected to pull through, and was reported conscious as of last night.
The Metro Nashville Police Department are currently looking for the perpetrators of this horrific crime. Both assailants were described as white, with the woman estimated at 5 feet 6 inches tall and in her early 30s. The man was described as 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 200 pounds, and both were said to be well dressed, as if they had attended a formal event. Police are asking the public for any information they may have on this violent couple; if you do, please call 615-742-7463.
Update 9/30: Brainard spoke with WZTV Fox17 prior to going into his surgery yesterday. He gave new information, stating that the female passenger’s name was Nikki, and confirmed what was previously provided. The surgery he underwent will wire his jaw shut for six weeks, as it was broken in two places and as many as nine teeth were lost/broken. He states that four projects he’s working on will have to be pushed back because of the recovery time.
