A thunderstorm warning didn’t stop the KTUphoria 2015 from going on as planned which took place at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on Long Island on Sunday, May 31. Well, most of KTUphoria, at least. The show featured several artists who know the top 40 list a bit too well. The list included both throwback and current artists like Kelly Clarkson, Jason Derulo, Ricky Martin, Prince Royce, and more.
Unfortunately, headliner Pitbull was sidelined towards the end of the night due to thunder and lightning. It may have been a sour way to end the night, but it certainly didn’t start that way. American Idol superstar and season one winner Kelly Clarkson kicked off the night with a string of number ones. Nearly everyone in the crowd knew all the words to her hit songs, which included “Miss Independent,” “Stronger,” and “My Life Would Suck Without You.” During “Since U Been Gone,” her mic slipped out of her hands so she changed the words to “My mic is gone,” eliciting hearty laughter from the cloud.
Prince Royce followed with a quick set showing off all of his top singles, which hit number one on the US Latin charts. This included “Stand by Me,” “Las Cosas Pequeñas,” and “Darte un Beso.” American Idol star Adam Lambert took the stage next. While he may have been the eighth season runner up, you wouldn’t know that from the crowd, many of whom attended just to see him. The self-proclaimed “Glamberts” took it all in, including “Ghost Town,” a single off Lambert’s new album “Original High.”
The next artist took us back in time to the early aughts. Shaggy took the stage, performing crowd favorites like “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel.” The reggae singer was the perfect lead in to another throwback favorite, Ricky Martin. Martin sang some of his top hits like “She Bangs,” “Shake Your Bon-Bon,” and, of course, “Livin’ La Vida Loca” as his Latin dancers and a nine piece band owned the stage. “New York energy is addictive,” Martin told the crowd.
Finally, Jason Derulo took the stage and did a set so filled with radio hits, it was hard to sit down. Derulo sang “Talk Dirty” along with “Wiggle,” “Ridin’ Solo” and his latest song “Want To Want Me” off his album “Everything is 4,” which dropped this week. Of course, the biggest crowd involvement came during “Marry Me.” That’s when Derulo told the audience that Pitbull wouldn’t be performing due to the impending storm. There may have been audible disappointment, but ultimately, the rain held until the crowd made it out of the theater. The headliner may have not performed, but it didn’t stop the radio station from slaying it as usual with this year’s lineup. Here’s hoping next year will be just as bangin’.
