President Barack Obama made a statement on Saturday in which he called for gun control in the United States. He made the statement the morning after the mass shooting at the Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado which occurred on Friday. Yahoo! News on Saturday said that the president said, “This is not normal. We can’t let it become normal.”
No sooner than Obama’s words went viral, there were those who agreed with his statement and those who disagreed with his statement on social media. Those who disagreed said that such situations can be considered normal in the United States – and some of those are saying that the government is to blame for such instances because it is not listening to the bulk of society on issues. Many are criticizing Obama, as they have in the past during tragedies, for politicizing the horrendous incident in which three persons were killed. The politicizing, of course, has to do with Obama calling for gun control once again immediately after a tragedy occurs. Obama brought up gun control immediately after stating that this incident is not normal by calling to curtail the “easy accessibility of weapons of war” for some people.
Obama said that if we truly care about situations such as occurred on Friday in Colorado Springs and if we are going to offer up our thoughts and prayers again with a clean conscience, then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them. Critics of Obama’s statements, of course, look at the areas of the nation that have the strictest gun laws anywhere. This includes his hometown of Chicago where protests have been going on since Tuesday after a video of a Chicago tragedy was made public. Chicago, with its strict gun laws, has often been called the murder capital of the world due to its incredibly high murder rate. It should be pointed out that the incident which ignited the current protests in Chicago had to do with a white policeman shooting and killing a knife-wielding black teenager – and the officer has finally been charged with first-degree murder in the incident.
In the Colorado Springs incident, besides three people being killed – including a policeman – another eleven people were shot, in which at least five were officers responding to the crime. Those shot were taken to hospitals with their gunshot wounds. According to CNN and the New York Times, the shooting suspect is now in custody. His name is Robert Lewis Dear. The authorities did not give a motive for the 57-year-old man’s actions. The man was said to have exchanged gunfire with authorities for hours before he finally was persuaded to give himself up. It is not known yet if the shooting has anything to do with the negative publicity Planned Parenthood has had since it has been revealed earlier this year that it sells aborted baby body parts and has been accused of selling the baby body parts for profit.
