The notion that President Barack Obama gets mad on occasion is likely no surprise to anyone who has observed the man in a variety of situations. He openly displays an array of other emotions as well. But as far as the president getting mad, few people would know better than Reggie Love, according to a Yahoo! News report on Thursday.
Reggie Love is the former well-respected Duke University football and basketball player who eventually became Obama’s “chief of stuff” as opposed to chief of staff. Love was Obama’s right-hand man, as his former 5-year job was referred to, and in the process he obviously got to know Obama very well. Years after no longer having that job, Love wrote a memoir detailing some of his close experiences with the 44th president of the United States. The memoir is quite appropriately entitled “Power Forward: My Presidential Education.”
As Obama’s personal assistant, Love traveled with Obama on the campaign trail when Obama was then an Illinois senator running for president. After being elected, Love was kept on the job. In his book, Love tells many stories that put the president in a popular light. That is expected as they appeared to get along very well – most of the time. Besides being a travel partner with Obama, Love spent a lot of down time with him as well doing such leisurely activities as hitting the basketball court together.
Of the juicy parts of the memoir, Love reveals some detailed stories in which he messed up in doing his personal assistant’s job at times. He writes that Obama’s reaction to being very mad is an uncomfortable and incredible silence. In the book, Love writes about a story that has been revealed before when he lost Obama’s briefcase in Florida which also had Obama’s keys and wallet with credit cards in it. He tells about Obama’s very negative reaction to getting the wrong or poorly prepared meals while on the road. When Obama got mad, Love has said, he would have preferred that the president yell at him rather than submit him to the deafening silence. The book also reveals some of Obama’s quirks – via likes and dislikes – such as Obama’s adamant dislike for M&Ms.
According to Simon & Schuster, Love is a unique witness to American history via his job alongside Obama. He spent 18-hour work days as Obama’s personal aide leading up to Obama’s first presidential term as well as well into Obama’s presidency. There were days when Obama spent more time with Love than anyone else. Love has said Obama taught him that how you conduct your life defines your character. According to the Herald-Sun, the book was released this year. The memoir continues to grow in popularity.
