It is no surprise that zombies are still all the rage and now it has become more about the varying ways they can try to do something new with them. The latest, Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse looks to bring the fun and gore to the genre with a decent cast including Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller, Joey Morgan, Sarah Dumont, David Koechner, and Clors Leachman, but can it offer up the bloody fun fans want or will it not earn its badge for success?
Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse follows three scouts, on the eve of their last camp-out who discover the true meaning of friendship when they attempt to save their town from a zombie outbreak. This is one of those films that you either get in on the ridiculous fun of it all or you don’t. Not everything works here, but overall it manages to do exactly what it set out to do and that is brings the laughs and the gore. The beginning of the film prior to the zombie fun, is hit and miss with it being a stereotypical teen comedy where not all the jokes work. Thankfully, once they get to the bloody fun it picks up and is pretty funny. There are still jokes that miss and some cheesy acting moments, but given the scenario you are dealing with you can let some of that go. There are some really funny zombie moments that play up the full raunchy nature of the teen comedy that some might think is too far, but it is what makes this film work. People wanting a hardcore gory zombie flick will be pleased as while there is no real horror to it all, there is no shortage of blood all infused with some raunch and laughs. The cast all seem to be having a good time and do a good job with their roles all around. There are some great music moments here too that set the tone of the sequence with one of the funniest involving Dolly Parton that will no doubt make you laugh chuckle with the silliness of it all.
In the end this is a film that will likely be hit and miss with audiences with some loving it and others feeling it missed a great opportunity. It’s far from perfect, but it does deliver on what it promises and is a fun little ride. If you are looking for something that is breaking down walls in the zombie genre then look somewhere else, but if you are looking for a bloody fun film full of nudity, zombies, boy scouts and an obsession with a busty iconic country star, then this is the film for you. Just shut off your brain and have some fun and check it out for yourself and decide.
