Back in February, the public was happy to hear that Fontella Marie Holmes was the winner of the $188 million Powerball lottery. Even though people didn’t know her personally, they were excited to learn the 26-year-old single mother had big plans for her four young children. That was then, but that’s not the way things are turning out for Holmes, according to Eur Web News on Tuesday.
The young North Carolina resident decided that she was going to accept her $188 million winnings in one lump sum. That meant she was awarded $127 million. After taxes, she received $88 million. In front of millions of people and on the morning talk shows, Holmes emphatically announced she was going to pay her tithes and set up college funds for her children. So far, she is doing something entirely different with her windfall.
MadameNoire reported that shortly after she won the money, Holmes posted a $3 million bond for her boyfriend Lamarr McDow, who goes by the name “Hot Sauce.” He was in jail, facing heroin trafficking charges. McDow was implicated after an investigation discovered more than 8,000 bags of heroin in his possession.
Last month, Holmes was also arrested when police went to her house to arrest McDow who had violated conditions of his parole by missing curfew. When officers searched Holmes’ house, they found that her boyfriend who lives with her had a .45 caliber pistol, and there was less than a half an ounce of drug and paraphernalia in Holmes’ Brunswick County home. Holmes spent an additional $6 million to get McDow out of prison a second time. He was released with a GPS monitoring device.
According to WWAY, Holmes and McDow are engaged. Also, the news station shared a post that Holmes posted of its Facebook page to respond to criticisms about the story the television station had reported. Holmes wrote, “What Y’all need to be worried about is Y’all money and not how I spend mine this is benefitting Y’all how? And no he’s no drug dealer or user but who are Y’all to judge anybody? I will definitely pray for Y’all because it’s much need…they talked about Jesus so I’m not surprised Y’all are talking about me but be blessed though,”
People criticized the young black woman for dating someone with Dow’s reputation. People say she could do better than keep spending millions of dollars bailing her boyfriend out of jail. Then they criticized her for not doing what she said she was going to do for her four young children. One child has cerebral palsy. Now they are criticizing her for comparing herself to Jesus in the Facebook post.
What Holmes should understand is that she was put in the public’s eye when she became the Powerball winner. Then she appeared before millions on “Good Morning America” declaring the good things she was going to do. It is not unusual for follow-up stories to be done on lottery winners. Unfortunately, so far Holmes’ story has not turned out to be a good one.
