In Pope Francis’ Regina Coeli address on Pentecost Sunday, Pope Francis greeted the thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peters’s Square. He commented on the beatification yesterday of Archbishop Oscar Romero who was a zealous pastor and martyr. According to Zenit News Agency, Pope Francis said that Archbishop Romero chose to be among his people; especially the poor and oppressed, even when it cost him his life. Bl. Oscar Romero was martyred while saying Mass in El Salvador. He also commented on the nun who was beatified in Kenya. He said that Sister Irene Stefani of the Consolata Missionaries served the Kenyan people with joy mercy and tender compassion. “The heroic example of these blesseds inspires in each of us to have the fervent desire to witness the Gospel with courage and self-sacrifice.” Pope Francis said
During his address Pope Francis described how the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles, removing their fear and giving them the courage to start their mission. He described the Church as our Mother. Pope Francis said that the gift of the Spirit restores harmony of languages, giving birth to the universal Church which embraces the whole world, without exception.
Describing the Church as our mother, Pope Francis exclaimed, “To no one does the Mother Church close the door in the face, to no one! Not even to the most sinful, to no one! And this is out of the strength, the grace of the Holy Spirit. The Mother Church opens, opens its doors to everyone because it is Mother.”
“On Pentecost,” he continued, “the Holy Spirit is poured out continuously,” so that “we go out of our mediocrity and our closing off of ourselves and communicate to the world the merciful love of the Lord.”
Pope Francis said that it is our mission to bring the language of the Gospel and the fire of the Holy Spirit to the world. We are to proclaim the risen Jesus, alive and present in our midst, and warm the hearts of people, bring them closer to Him, the Way the Truth and the Life.”
at the end of his address Pope Francis reminded everyone to pray for him and wished everyone a good Pentecost Sunday lunch.
The Catholic faith teaches that Pentecost is the feast day which celebrates the birth of the faith. After Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles were no longer afraid and knew how God wanted them to spread the good news of the gospel. The good news that Jesus had risen from the dead! The good news that Jesus is the Messiah! The good news that Jesus is the source of our salvation! The good news that Jesus came to forgive our sins! The good news that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life!
Rejoice and be glad!
