The seeds have been planted, and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is set to blossom in early 2016. As EA and PopCap Games work tirelessly on the game, atombash.com recently got the opportunity to chat with Kyle Duncan, Producer of Garden Warfare 2, about some of the changes and improvements that Garden Warfare 2 will have over its predecessor. During our discussion, we learned about the game’s new characters, new features, and the new game modes that Garden Warfare 2 will have when it releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC early next year.
The first Garden Warfare was released in early 2014 and was well received by fans of the Plants vs. Zombies series. As is the case with all sequels, the development team at PopCap is looking to make the game better than ever before. When it comes to changes made in Garden Warfare 2, Duncan tells us that it is about giving the fans what they love.
“Garden Warfare 2 is about giving our fans more of what they love. People were really surprised by Garden Warfare and so it was really about listening to the fans,” said Duncan.
How are they listening to the fans, you ask? Well, now you can play the game without needing Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus, and there is a solo-play game mode. If that wasn’t enough proof for you, the development team is also working on the new Backyard Battleground mode.
“One of the big improvements in Garden Warfare 2 is the adding of Backyard Battleground and the whole solo play experience, giving fans the ability to play without needing to have Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus, so that was huge. You can play every game mode with or against AI and again, you can grab a friend and have them play with you. In the first Garden Warfare, you could only play one split-screen mode, so we’re really excited that people can experience our game locally and then the Backyard Battleground is giving players all new things to do. You can choose your side and switch back and forth,” explained Duncan.
Although Garden Warfare 2 will allow for split-screen multiplayer, when asked if four-player local co-op was considered for the game, Duncan told us that it was something they looked but ultimately decided against.
“We looked at it and have talked to our marketing people and one of the concerns was the amount of hardware and controllers that people have out there. Right now, there is not a plan to do it,” Duncan shared.
Plants vs. Zombies is famous for its quirky and imaginative cast of characters, and the new additions coming to Garden Warfare 2 look to continue that trend. While discussing the inspiration behind new characters, Duncan shared with us how the creative process works at PopCap.
“The characters come in two different ways. Sometimes we’ll look at a piece of art and say ‘let’s make an ability or character out of it.’ Sometimes it’ll be because we need to have a certain function served. Fans wanted someone on the plants side to go head-to-head with the Soldier. The Peashooter was kind of a Soldier class in Garden Warfare 1, but they really wanted a run and gun assault class and that’s how Kernel Corn was born. We wanted him to be quick with high damage power and high impact, someone who could go head to head with any other class,” he tells us.
He continued to explain the differences between characters, their skills, and their purpose during a match. “Rose is a little bit different. Sometimes when you’re playing, you’ve got that other guy on that other team who is causing mayhem and is controlling to whole game, Rose is meant to be that disruptive character who can come in and find him, Time Snare him and really disrupt things,” he said.
Duncan further expanded on the topic, “We also liked the idea of the Mystic and Magic with her Magic Missiles. It fit well because we could have her be the builder class as well. Citron, well we just wanted to build a big tank and just the idea of a transforming ball, it was just a ton of fun. We wanted Citron to be big, heavy and strong, but at the same time we said, ‘okay now he’s still got to be able to move around the battlefield quickly as well’.”
Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 will release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in early 2016. No release date has been announced at this time.
