Pine Haven Café is a small restaurant in the Guesthouse Hotel Upland. As such, it was surprising to discover what an incredible chef they have there. Chef Milo Dorman is an accomplished chef who has worked in much larger hotels, like Red Lion hotels up north and Doubletree Hotel in Ontario. This article reviews their Sunday brunch.
Two Sunday Brunches, $24.19, including tax, or $12.10 each
Their price for a Sunday brunch was delightfully low considering the quality of the dishes and the creativity as well. This reviewer and his wife arrived after 1:00 PM so the brunch was already starting to wind down. Nevertheless, the quality and variety was still pleasing.
Eggs Benedict plus Goat Cheese Benedict
One of the things that the reviewer particularly wanted to eat was the Eggs Benedict. Finding Goat Cheese Benedict was a pleasant surprise. Chef Milo described this as a Florentine Benedict. This item is made with basil, lemon, hollandaise sauce, and goat cheese. Chef Milo said that also serves an Eggs Benedict type dish with pork belly on some Sundays.
One interesting side note is that Chef Milo uses a very light biscuit on his canapés and Eggs Benedict instead of the more traditional English muffin on that dish.
Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy
A unique item on his buffet was chocolate gravy from a recipe he got from his grandmother. It’s a simple gravy made with sugar, cocoa, and Carnation Milk.
The buffet offered two dishes with the tiny shrimp:
- Shrimp, tomato and onion salad
- Shrimp canapés
Made to Order Omelets
The cook for the omelets did an exceptional job. The reviewer’s companion ordered one that was delicious. Making a great omelet is a skill that he had while most others are boring.
Potato hash brown casserole
This dish was hash brown potatoes with cheese.
Pork sausage patties and links
The buffet also included pork sausage patties and links. The sausage patties were especially good, better than normally served by other breakfast restaurants. Chef Milos said that he uses Roses Pork Sausage.
Miscellaneous Other Items
- Stuffed chicken (a specialty that day)
- A variety of fresh melon and pineapple pieces
- Chicken tortilla soup,
While there were a multitude of dessert choices, two in particular deserve mentioning:
- Danish breakfast roll bread pudding
They had an outrageously delicious bread pudding made from Danish breakfast rolls. Chef Dorman used to serve this when he worked at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario.
- No bake cookies
Another fascinating dessert was the no bake cookies made with peanut butter, oats, cocoa, butter, sugar and no flour.
- Mini-taco desserts
Although none were sampled this time, the reviewer experienced these desserts at the Claremont Restaurant Week 2015 Chamber Mixer and Media Preview. They were clever, sweet, and tasty.
Fresh brewed iced tea
It was very good, and Lorraine kept the glass refilled.
Service & Atmosphere
Our server, Lorraine, was exceptionally helpful and very attentive. It was a special treat that Chef Milo Dorman actually was on the floor and visited with diners.
The restaurant itself was small without feeling cramped. In fact, it felt cozy and friendly with still roomy.
One of the reasons that they are not open for dinner is that they do a lot of catering at Pine Haven Cafe.
Chef Milo’s Freshness and Variety
He stated that he uses all fresh ingredients. He has very little that he keeps the coolers preferring to get fresh ingredients daily. Another point is that he likes to try different dishes on his buffet and menu so go prepared to see something different.
Sunday brunch at the Pine Haven Café is a wonderful, pleasant, friendly dining experience. They have amazing variety of the choices. Moreover, the quality of the food on their buffet was excellent. There were many creative dishes. And all of them ranged from good to exceptionally delicious. An added bonus was that the price was so reasonable for a brunch buffet.
