The new fast casual concept restaurant Piaza Fresh has opened in Locust Point’s McHenry Row Shopping Center. It is the second Piaza Fresh that has opened their doors, both within months of each other. The first Piaza Fresh located on the Eastern Shore, Berlin, MD, was nominated just after 30 days of opening for the 2015 Best Pizza by Coastal Magazine.
Their brick oven is a searing 1,000 degrees, enabling them to cook their Neapolitan style pizzas in 90 seconds as they go around the circulating floor of the brick oven. The searing heat crisps the crust with occasional mountains of dough puffing up for a slight charring kiss. Their pizzas were very reminiscent of the pizza I enjoyed at the renowned pizzeria Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn, New York some 15 years ago.
The fast casual concept, which is a create your own or choose a signature style, offers up the house made dough in plain or rosemary with an optional gluten-free choice. Choose a sauce; choose your cheese(s), your protein – reserve steak, Perdue chicken, Fontanini meatballs or sausage, bacon and a plethora of fresh toppings. My Piaza Fresh custom made pizza was simple tomato sauce, mozzarella, sautéed mushroom enlivened with their garlic scented olive oil.
Let’s talk piadas! They do them as well. As they explain it, it is an Italian version of a burrito. Take an Italian, thin flat bread and instead of rice using pearl pasta, add your chicken or steak, cheese with a drizzle of balsamic glaze – voila, a piada. Want to eat light, create your own, generous sized salad.
Oh, don’t miss out on their micro brewed sodas, especially the root beer. Right now it is BYOB, but they are looking to get a beer and wine license.
In Piaza Fresh’s Locust Point convenience factor:
- Ample free parking at the high rise parking lot behind the restaurant
- Right off two stops from the Charm City Circulator’s Banner line Stop 408 Whetstone Way and Stop 413 Woodall Street. Avoid drive home traffic, grab the free bus and enjoy a quality pizza
- Delivery: Starting soon to McHenry Row residents and business and expanding to the neighborhood.
Sweet endings: Don’t miss the cannoli filled with the top-of-the-line ricotta, the chocolate-lined shell – it is owner David Crocetti Italian grandmother’s recipe.
