Shock rock monsters GWAR played at Harpos Concert Theater in Detroit on Friday. GWAR is currently touring across North America celebrating their 30th anniversary, with opening support by Born of Osiris and Detroit’s own Battlecross.
GWAR is an American heavy metal band from Richmond, Virginia. They have released thirteen studio albums, two live albums overs the years.
They have been around since 1984 and are easily identified by their distinct grotesque monster costumes. This is not your average rock concert, but more of a theatrical “Out-of-this-world” performance. GWAR fills their shows with excessive humor that can be portrayed as barbaric, violent, and sexual, often incorporating social and political satire. There has been much controversy over their music and live stage shows. Every performance has graphic violence which leads to the audience being sprayed with massive amounts of fake blood and they are also urinated on with fake urine!
The band GWAR consists of a group of rotating musicians, artists and filmmakers collectively known as Slave Pit Inc. Numerous members have came and left and sadly some have passed on. Tragedy stuck the band again last year when GWAR lost their long time singer Dave Brockie a.k.a. Oderus Urungus to a drug overdose. Brockie was the last original member of the band. GWAR continued on, finding a woman monster to sing. Kim Dylla became the character Vulvatron, but she was soon replaced after one tour. GWAR now has Blothar, a new character for lead vocals, who is the former bassist Mike Bishop (the original character, Beefcake the Mighty).
Harpos was packed early and Born of Isis opened the show and did a good job warming up the crowd, but there were so many fans there waiting for Detroit’s own Battlecross! These guys play some awesome metal and have been very successful the last few years actively touring and playing festivals. They tore up the stage with killer riffs, lots of headbanging and some serious hair flying around. The fans were singing along and the mosh pit got crazy wild. It was a perfect warm up for the true Monsters of Rock!
GWAR hit the stage at 10 pm and things immediately kicked off with violence. There is always something new and exciting with these guys and I had never seen a Keytar player in the band. Well, it wasn’t long into the first song, that the Keytar monster began to get hacked by the monstrous singer. Huge amounts of fake blood squirted into the air and onto the crowd below. The fans below screamed and cheered and rushed the stage to get splattered with more fake red blood. The main floor was completely packed with fans of all ages by this time, many wearing white shirts so they can have a custom one of a kind GWAR blood splattered t-shirt by the end of the show. GWAR then introduced the new monstrous singer Blothar, who has huge over sized antlers on this head and a cow utter on his belly. He immediately started shooting a yellow liquid out of his utters. The fans seem to love every minute of this and it continues throughout the performance. By the end of the show, everyone was smiling, laughing, and soaked with red blood and yellow piss. If you haven’t been to a GWAR show, it is something that you must witness live at least once in your life. They actually play their instruments very well and are highly entertaining. The lyrics will surely have you laughing out loud and you will be in shock and awe by the sights. These guys are constantly touring and always come to Harpos around Halloween time.
