The Missing Link Tour came to Freedom Hill Amphitheater in Sterling Heights, Michigan this weekend with co-headliners Mastodon and Clutch, along with opening support by Graveyard. These bands forged energies that evening and brought us a rock show that was full of catchy songs, killer riffs, and mind blowing, out-of-this-world performances.
Graveyard opened the show with a 45 minute set of 9 songs as the sun was setting to a perfect Michigan spring day. Graveyard has a cool psychedelic/hard rock sound and these guys hail from Gothenburg, Sweden. With a few albums under their belt, they are touring in support of their latest release Lights Out, on Nuclear Blast Records. Their set was awesome and fans were treated to Mastodon Guitarist B. Hinds performing with them on the song “The Suits, the Law & the Uniform”.
Mastodon was up next. This band hails from Atlanta, Georgia and is touring in support of their 6th studio album Once More ‘Round the Sun. Mastodon was not headlining this show tonight, but still performed over an hour set of 14 songs. The band appeared high on rocket fuel, speeding through song after song. This was the last weekend of the tour and maybe that’s why Mastodon was truly on fire!? They have a week off and then off to Europe to play numerous festivals and even open for Metallica in Russia for two shows! Mastodon’s energy as this show was infectious and highly entertaining. The G.A. Pit down front was raging with a circle and crowd surfers from the very beginning. The songs selections were a stellar choice of classic cuts like “Aqua Dementia”, “Megalodon” and “Crystal Skull”, along with six catchy songs off the new album. The Mastodon guys seemed to be in extra good spirits too and were electrifying, exciting and dynamic, performing like it was their last show on earth!
Clutch headlined the show and ripped thru a long set of 17 songs. These guys have a huge following of fans in Michigan so it was so surprise to see them play last and fill up the venue. Clutch hails from Germantown, Maryland, and have a bluesy stoner rock sound. They have 10 studio albums and are touring in support of their latest, Earth Rocker, released on their very own record label Weathermaker. Clutch singer Neil Fallon was charged and dynamic and the entire band stirred with power-driven forces. Clutch and Mastodon has been long time friends and it was no surprise to see Mastodon Guitarist B. Hinds appear on stage with the band near the end of the show, performing the song “D.C. Sound Attack”. It was an epic evening of electric riffs and thrilling performances.
