The last show of the year at the Woodlawn Theatre opened this weekend and fans of all ages braved the weather on Friday’s opening night to experience “Peter Pan.” This production runs until Wednesday December 23 and it proved to be an unforgettable treat. “Peter Pan” is the musical adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s 1904 play about the boy who doesn’t want to grow up. His adventures on the island of Neverland with Wendy, her brothers, Tinker Bell, Captain Hook and others make up most of the story.
After the customary greeting by Greg Hinojosa the lights dimmed and the story begins with the children interacting in the nursery. Soon after Peter Pan flies in through the window amid a scattering of fairy dust and cheers and applause from the audience. Once the children arrive at Neverland the stage explodes with the different sights and sounds of the island. The flying sequences are definitely the highlight of the show but audiences are in for a night of music, laughter and high energy dancing. The audience gets pulled into the action during the scene when the Lost Boys escape the pirates and hide among them much to the delight of the children in the audience.
Carlye Gossen is outstanding in her role as Peter Pan and Joshua Goldberg’s portrayal of Captain Hook is devilishly good. There is no Christmas themed show at the Woodlawn Theatre this holiday season but “Peter Pan” more than makes up for it as it is appropriate for the entire family and is highly entertaining.
