Peter Asher brings his “Musical Memoir of the 60s and Beyond” back to California this week and it will have special meaning, Asher’s manager Keith Putney said Tuesday. Asher will perform at the Harris Center in Folsom, California, on Wednesday, Nov. 11. It will be Asher’s first solo show in the area.
“Peter & Gordon’s first California show after reuniting in 2005 was in the Sacramento area, so it’s a treat to bring ‘Memoir’ there for the first time” Putney said. The Sacramento area is also sentimental for musical director Jeff Alan Ross and lead guitarist Brian Pothier, who played their first gigs with Peter & Gordon in Sacramento in 2006. Next year’s Flower Power Cruise will bring them to 10 years on stage with Asher.
The show comes amidst a burst of activity. The Asher-produced Steve Martin and Edie Brickell album “So Familiar” made its debut on the Billboard Bluegrass chart at No. 1 this week. “Bright Star,” the Steve Martin/Edie Brickell musical for which Asher is musical supervisor, plays the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in December before reaching Broadway for the first time on February 25. “I’m delighted, as both are both Steve and Edie, with the response to ‘So Familiar,’” Asher said. “With the announcement that ‘Bright Star’ will play Broadway’s Cort Theatre, it’s been a great week”
It’s been a particularly busy time for Asher. The “Memoir” show made its debut in Liverpool at the Cavern and in Nashville at City Winery in September. Asher also opened for Jerry Lee Lewis during his final London shows. His acoustic duo show alongside Albert Lee made its debut in Bakersfield, California, and followed up with shows at McCabe’s in Santa Monica, The MIM in Phoenix, and the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano during October. Asher and Albert Lee will also perform together Dec. 7 at The Falcon in Marlboro New York, Dec. 8 and 9 at the Iridium in New York City, Jan 15 at Bull Run in Shirley, Massachusetts and Jan. 17 at Sellersville 1894 Theatre in Sellersville, Pennsylvania.
In addition, Asher is working alongside Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack to “Kung Fu Panda 3,” and produced tracks for the soundtrack of the recently released “Rock the Casbah” starring Bill Murray. Harvey Goldsmith has announced new dates for “Hans Zimmer Revealed,” now dubbed “Hans Zimmer Live On Tour”, for which Asher will return to his role as musical director of a 70 piece ensemble. Asher and Chad and Jeremy will also headline the upcoming Metro New York Fest for Beatles Fans early next year with an expanded “Memoir” show that will include music, stories and archival material from both acts.
