The holidays are fast approaching bringing with them the challenge of finding the perfect stocking stuffer for that very special person – yourself. This year’s inspiration is courtesy of some Jeep brand elves we know who loaned us a 2016 Firecracker Red Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4×4 for test drive the week before Thanksgiving.
Now just because it is called a ‘stocking stuffer’ does not mean it has to be hung on the mantle. In fact, the size of Wrangler Unlimited precludes the traditional presentation, but we have a plan for that. Put the keys in the stocking hung on the mantle and park the ‘Christmas Red’ Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4×4 in the driveway. And, you may also want to put a big red bow on it to make it easy to find in the morning.
2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara
We could spend a lot of time telling you all about the off-road prowess of a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited , but you already know that, so we will just give a quick summary. The Wrangler Unlimited has three trim levels, the basic Sport, mid-level Sahara and the legendary Rubicon. All are powered by the award winning 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine mated to either a 6-speed manual of 5-speed automatic transmission (optional) with part-time transfer cases for 2-wheel drive on road and 4-wheel drive off-road.
Looking more directly at the Sahara Unlimited – you get all of the Wrangler iconic rugged off-road prowess plus the daily driver convenience of being a smooth running five-passenger SUV on the highway. Sahara runs on new exclusive 18-inch wheels with Granite Crystal painted pockets and polished surface that are clad with Bridgestone Dueler 693 P255/70R18 OWL on/off road tires) for that smooth ride on the highway with plenty of rugged grip to handle challenging off-road terrain of any type.
Sahara for 2016 has a few cosmetic changes from 2015 – including the new wheels – we should mention. Other changes include the Sahara body-color front and rear bumper applique, high gloss fine silver metallic seven-slot grille throats and iconic headlamp rings, Satin Chrome steering wheel bezel and Quick Silver grab handle , bezels and vent rings.
Sahara Unlimited Test Vehicle
Often we suggest some additions or deletions to the specific vehicle loaned to us that would make it a better value for the buyer. In this case, the Jeep elves fitted out our Wrangler Unlimited Sahara loaner perfectly.
Our loaner Sahara Unlimited 4×4 was priced at $33,295 before building it out. The elves added the Five-Speed Automatic Transmission with Hill Descent Control ($1,350) and Leather-Trimmed and Heated Front Bucket Seats ($1,350) that brought the base price to $35,995. Of course, as an iconic Wrangelr Sahara, it had tow hooks front and rear, removable doors (four), fold-down windscreen, fog lamps, halogen headlamps, heated swing-away power mirrors, two -speed windshield washers with dual nozzles and a full size spare (with matching wheel) traditionally swing-gate mounted.
In deference to the chill of the season, the Jeep elves equipped our Sahara the Dual Top Group Package ($2,185) that included the Premium Black Sunrider Soft Top plus a Black Freedom Top 3-Piece Hard Top with Rear Window Wiper/ Washer and Defroster. To note the holiday season, the chief elf had the Freedom Top Hard Top changed out for one in the Firecracker Red body-color ($1,100).
Mechanically, our Sahara Unlimited was equipped with the Command-Trac Shift-on-the-fly Part-Time 4WD with a Skid Plate underneath, Next Generation Dana 30 Solid Front Axle and Dana 44 Heavy Duty Rear Axle and standard 3.21 Front/Rear Axle Ratios . The 22.5-gallon fuel tank is protected by another Skid Plate as is the Five-Speed Automatic Transmission. Other features included Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Roll Mitigation and Hill Start Assist.
On the inside, our Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4×4 was the usual basic – yet effective and complete -right stuff befitting an iconic Wrangler.
