“Linus and Lucy” is one of the world’s most beloved and best-known tunes. It is part of the original soundtrack from A Charlie Brown Christmas, an animated TV special that premiered on December 9, 1965.
The show’s producers and CBS executives were so convinced of its failure that they almost cancelled it before it aired. Instead, it earned the night’s largest viewing audience and broad critical acclaim, including Emmy and Peabody awards.
Several of the soundtrack’s songs by Vince Guaraldi, such as “Christmas Time is Here” and “Skating” are holiday staples. “Linus and Lucy” and its video clip (featuring Schroeder, Snoopy, and Pig Pen in a jam session ) quickly became a year-round classic. The song has inspired dozens of covers, including an electronic version by Guaraldi and another signature version by David Benoit.
The success of A Charlie Brown Christmas launched a Peanuts media franchise that includes TV specials, movies, stage plays, and product advertisements. ABC will broadcast a special 50th Anniversary edition on November 30, 2015, just in time to help promote the release of The Peanuts Movie.
“Linus and Lucy” is available on various albums from major vendors. Please consider purchasing them from a local independent record store.
Every record has some particularly fascinating facts behind it; here are a few for this one. The child performers on the soundtrack for A Charlie Brown Christmas were so impressive that the band members of Jefferson Airplane, who were working in an adjacent studio, came over to get their autographs.
