GUILFORD—The Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates scored five runs in the first two innings and held on for a 6-4 victory over the Dexter Tigers on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers took the early lead, when Kolby Kain led off the game with a single, she advanced to second base on an error. Macie Melvin sent Kain home with a run scoring single. Jewel Lamb struck out Morgan Gray and Cayla Wyman to end the first inning, as the Tigers left runners on second and third base.
Alex Speed got the Pirates offense started quickly. Speed hit a double to lead off the bottom of the first inning, she came around to score on a Delani Bennett double. Grace Riitano and Jordynne Littlefield each followed with a single. The Littlefield hit scored two runs and gave PCHS a 3-1 lead after the first inning.
Erin Speed hit a one out single in the bottom of the second inning for the Pirates, she stole second and came home to score when Bennett’s drive to left field was misplayed by the Tigers. The play also scored Lamb, who drew a walk.
Lamb cruised through the middle innings in the circle for the Pirates. She retired 11 out of 12 batters in a stretch that went through the fourth inning.
The Tigers cut the deficit to 5-2, when Abby Webber reached base on a Lamb error to lead off the fifth inning. Webber scored on a Melvin groundout.
PCHS got that run back quickly when they scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The biggest jam Lamb got into came in the seventh inning, as the Tigers got hits from Kain and Peyton Watson, while Abby Jordan and Gray each drew a walk. Dexter scored two runs and had the tying run at second base. The sophomore pitcher (Lamb) struck out Wyman to end the game.
Lamb allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks, she struck out four. Littlefield had two hits, two RBI, and one run scored for the Pirates. Bennett had a double, one run scored, and one RBI. Alex Speed had a double and one run scored. Erin Speed had two hits, two stolen bases, and one run scored. PCHS (8-1) currently sits third in the Maine Principals’ Association class C heal point standings. The Pirates will host Schenck on Friday afternoon.
Jordan pitched a solid game for the Tigers. Only three of the six runs she allowed were earned. She allowed seven hits, and walked two, while striking out eight (including four in the sixth inning). Kain had three hits and two runs scored, Melvin had two hits and three RBI, and Watson had two hits and one RBI. Dexter (6-4) currently sits fourth in the class C heal point standings. The Tigers will host George Stevens on Friday afternoon.
