Everyone knows that a recipe from Paula Deen just has to be delicious and this apple pie recipe is no exception. As promised, it is so very easy to make!
If you really want to make this as easy as pie, buy a crust and start from there. Pillsbury makes a crust available in the refrigerator section of the grocery store that you can unroll and use right away. If you like to make your own, Paula Deen’s crust recipe is below.
Although you can make a pie from any type of apple, Paula Deen recommends using half Macintosh and half Granny Smith apples for this pie. Macintosh are softer and sweeter; Granny Smith are crisper and a bit tart, thus complimenting each other. If you don’t have these types of apples on hand, you can always substitute other types.
Paula Deen’s Easy Apple Pie
Ingredients for Easy Apple Pie:
- Unbaked pastry for 9-inch, 2-crust pie
- 8 cups peeled and sliced apples, half Granny Smith and half Macintosh
- 1 ¼ cups sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 tsp. nutmeg
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 eggs, slightly beaten with a fork for egg wash
- Cinnamon sugar for dusting (1/4 cup sugar mixed with 2 tsp. cinnamon)
Directions for making Easy Apple Pie:
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
In a small mixing bowl, stir together the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and flour, set aside. In a large mixing bowl, add the peeled and sliced apples. Sprinkle sugar mixture over the apples and stir lightly to coat.
Line a 9-inch pie plate with unbaked pastry. Put the apple mixture into the plate. Evenly slice the butter on the top of the apples. Cover with unbaked pie pastry; seal and crimp the edges; trim any excess crust. Make at least three slits in the middle of the top crust to allow steam to escape.
Lightly brush the egg wash onto the top of the pastry. Sprinkle liberally with cinnamon sugar mixture.
Place onto a baking tray into the preheated oven for approximately 50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are bubbly. Allow the pie to cool before serving.
Paula Deen’s Pie Dough Recipe
Ingredients for Pie Dough:
- 2 ½ cup flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1 cup butter, very cold and cubed
- ¼ – ½ cup ice water
Directions for making Pie Dough:
In a food processor combine the flour, salt and sugar. Pulse to mix. Add the cubed, cold butter and gradually add the ice water. Pulse just until the dough just comes together. Careful not to overmix the dough or the crust will be tough.
Remove the dough from the food processor. Cut it into two equal sections. Pat each section into a disc and wrap separately in plastic wrap. Place into the refrigerator to chill for 1 hour before using (can be frozen for future use).
