For years Spongebob Squarepants has been dominating Nickelodeon as one of their most popular series. They have created not only a fun hilarious series, but it has become so much more than just the TV series with a product juggernaut and a feature film. Now they are bringing the gang back to the big screen again with The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, but will it be live up to the standards of this now iconic character or will it sink deep below the sea?
The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water follows Spongebob and the gang as they go on a quest to discover a stolen recipe that takes him to our dimension, our world, where he tangles with a pirate. As expected all the original voice cast are back including Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Bill, Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, Mr. Lawrence, but this time squaring off against Antonio Banderas as the pirate who looks to be having a great time. He clearly fully embraces his fun and silly role as this pirate and makes it work all the better. The promos to the film have been pretty focused on them coming to our world and while it looks amazing is not what most of the fans will likely want. Thankfully the majority of the film still takes place in the normal world of standard animation and looks as vibrant and beautiful as ever. They take a full on Road Warrior approach to the story that is hilarious to watch and really steps it up past just being another episode. Everything any fan of the series or just the characters alone is here and more. When they do take them out of the water and into our world they do a great job with the animation keeping the nature of the characters intact in a fully believable direction for the story that fits right into the ridiculous nature of the whole series. There has always been so simple about the series, but it’s clever writing and attention to detail makes it so much more complicated than you may ever notice. While it isn’t a major plot point to the film one of the really cool parts is getting to see a lot of new secondary fish character designs in the backgrounds making the film feel even bigger.
If there are any complaints about the film it comes in a more of a personal preference of the 2D animation. The real world stuff kind of takes you out of the feel of their usual world of fun, but thankfully it works so well it will still likely work for the majority of fans. Even this small issue doesn’t take away from the brilliance of it all including an awesome dolphin character and a couple of new twists on the famous theme song that you will not soon forget. In addition to the fun animated film this release includes over an hour of bonus features including deleted scenes, 3 exclusive sing-along music videos, numerous featurettes and so much more.
