Late yesterday, October 24, 2015, the Libertarian Party of Palm Beach County (LP Palm Beach) issued a statement (seen below) on the police shooting death of Corey Jones, Jr. The local political party is calling for an independent Special Grand Jury to investigate Jones’ death. The matter is being investigated by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).
Jones, a 31 year old musician, was on the side of southbound I-95 PGA ramp waiting for a tow truck for his Hyundai Sante Fe which had broken down at 3 a.m. on October 18, 2015. Jones had finished a gig with his fellow band members and was on his way home. Jones was approached by a plain clothes Palm Beach Gardens Police Officer in an unmarked white van with dark tinted windows. Unfortunately, there was no police vehicle dash camera or body camera on the officer to record what interaction the two individuals had on that fateful night.
“He doesn’t know if he’s about to be mugged, he’s about to be robbed, he’s about to be killed,” family lawyer Benjamin Crump said of Jones after the meeting with the Florida prosecutor. “Imagine yourselves on the side of the road at 3 in the morning, abandoned, the sense of concern you would have waiting for a tow truck and an unmarked van rolls up.”
Here is the statement from the Libertarian Party of Palm Beach County on the death of Corey Jones, Jr.:
“The Libertarian Party of Palm Beach County extends our condolences to the family of Corey Jones Jr. His passing is a loss to not just his family but to the entire community. It is our hope that this tragedy can be an agent for change that leads to the betterment of our community.
The current ‘independent investigation’ is being conducted by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. In light of the fact that the Sheriff’s Office is also dealing with its own deputy-involved shootings, The LP Palm Beach questions if one local law-enforcement agency can adequately and impartially investigate another.
In addition, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw has requested the FBI’s assistance in investigating the killing of Corey Jones Jr. by Palm Beach Gardens police Officer Nouman Raja. However, we believe this is another example of government investigating itself.
As a result, the LP Palm Beach is understandably concerned whether justice will be served and feels that an independent special grand jury should look into the facts of this matter. The special grand jury should be free of any state or local influence and must be truly independent.
As the local Libertarian Party, we recommend implementing measures to prevent police misconduct, which may include the use of police body cameras, improved de-escalation police training, elimination of the militia-like law enforcement culture, ending the War on Drugs and a citizen’s review committee to investigate any alleged police misconduct. The party would like to partner with any and all groups to assist in implementing these and other life-saving measures.”
