Paleontology is a science that is the study of fossils. Fossils are defined as the remains and/or traces of ancient life, generally assumed to be Ice Age or older according to secular scientists. Paleontology is similar in some respects to archaeology. However, archaeology concentrates on human artifacts, like pottery and Egyptian mummies, and paleontology studies the fossils buried in sedimentary rocks. These fossils tell a story of the rocks they are entombed in. Even though the story is a mystery to some people on how these creatures became fossils? It is not! There is evidence on how these creatures became fossils.
Few fossils are forming today and are rarely, except in extreme conditions, forming anywhere on earth. And yet there are billions of fossils scattered all around the world, from Asia to Antarctica. Every continent (Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, North America, South America, and Antarctica) on earth has fossils. Most scientists believe there once was one land mass, a supercontinent in the past, where most of life resided, including the dinosaurs. This one land mass would have allowed dinosaurs, and other animals to attain worldwide distribution we see today. All fossils are found in many types of sedimentary rock (shale, sandstone, and limestone) and all through many layers, but are particularly noticeable within the Cambrian strata and above. That is why secular scientists have designated the Cambrian layer as the “Cambrian explosion”. It marks the deepest layer where we find truly the first fossils. But these scientists struggle to explain why most major animal phyla just appeared suddenly out of nowhere, worldwide and fully formed and functional, without any trace of transitional fossils before them. This is a major unsolved mystery in secular science.
The fossils tell a different story from what we been hearing? What is the explanation for the Cambrian Explosion event and all subsequent fossil-rich layers? Remember special conditions are required to preserve and make a fossil. Things do not just die and become a fossil, just by time alone. Remember when in the United States of America they killed the American Buffalo (Bison) by the millions and left them to rot on plains. Very few remains were found of them. There was no fossils of them at all. Today we know, scavengers first eat the choice parts of any dead animal, then aerobic and anaerobic bacteria complete the decomposition process. Truly the saying for the American Bison, “dust to dust” is an appropriate phrase in their case.
But in contrast, creation scientists have provided a more satisfying explanation for fossils. The Cambrian layer is simply interpreted as the beginning of the worldwide flood deposition that spread across each of the continents. This layer buried all sorts of animals and plants rapidly, many while still alive, preserving them for us to discover. The Bible record of the major phases of world history show no trace of the three Geologic Eras, Paleozoic Era, Mesozoic Era, and Cenozoic Era. Scriptures in Genesis chapter one reports the instant creation of plant and animal kinds. Furthermore, the Bible describes in detail a worldwide flood (Genesis 6-8), capable of preserving life’s traces in fossil form. Those so-called eras are not separate time but distinct ecosystems buried by sedimentary floodwaters. The Bible’s timeline shows a creation thousands, not billions of years old.
