Previously, brushing one’s teeth with a manual toothbrush or with an automatic model had its cons, such as brushing for the entire duration and applying the correct amount of pressure. Oral-B’s Black 7000 Electric Toothbrush with SmartGuide (MSRP: $219.00) aims to solve such issues and much more.
Most striking about Oral-B’s Black 7000 is how much it can do, as there are six brushing modes and seven different brush heads that can be utilized.
Stating with the latter, this electric toothbrush comes with three brush heads: FlossAction, ProWhite, and the Sensitive model. Interestingly, all three brushes are circular and designed for a specific purpose (reaching between teeth, whitening, and cleaning with softer bristles, respectively). This author preferred the Sensitive model, as it as more comfortable on his teeth and gums.
Additionally, the four other brush heads that work with Oral-B’s Black 7000 are the Precision Clean, Ortho (for braces), Power Tip (for bridges, crowns, implants), and the more oblong-shaped Sweep.
The toothbrush itself is black with silver accents and features a battery charge indicator on the front. On a full charge, the Black 7000’s battery lasted for just under two weeks and took about a day to full charge again.
Moreover, two buttons on the front allow one to power the device on/off as well as cycle through the six brushing modes that are as follows:
• Daily Clean – traditional and most generally used
• Deep Clean – extends the timer from 30 seconds per quadrant to 45 seconds
• Sensitive – more gentle with a slower running motor
• Whitening – allows for polishing
• Massage – cycles the motor to alternating faster and then slower speeds
• Tongue Cleaning – speed in-between Daily Clean and Sensitive modes without a pressure sensor
Although multilayered in functionality, the most enjoyed feature is the SmartGuide. The aforementioned appears as a small, oval, silver-colored alarm clock and it does, indeed, tell the time. However, more importantly, this device acts as the display for the Black 7000 Electric Toothbrush. It shows the icon for the current brushing mode and keeps track of the time per quadrant/which quadrant is being brushed.
Most importantly, the SmartGuide reinforces positive brushing behaviors by displaying a happy face if brushing is sustained for the appropriate duration and four stars if one cleans all four quadrants. Plus, Oral-B has built in two ways to lessen applying too much pressure when brushing, namely by displaying a sad face on the SmartGuide and with a red light (located on the back of the toothbrush).
The author had trouble discerning the difference between a few of the different brushing modes, as they felt very similar. Subsequently, one might question if all of the six modes would be needed. That being said Oral-B’s Black 7000 Electric Toothbrush with SmartGuide is definitely recommended and it will be interesting to see what technology Oral-B integrates into its future toothbrushes.
