The One Million Moms organization is tagging the new ABC show featuring the Muppets as a perverted offering on TV today and they say that it is nothing like the days of “Sesame Street.” ABC made no false claims that it was a child’s show, they’ve billed it as an “adult Muppets show,” but also as one that will appeal to “kids of all ages.”
According to News Max on September 25, even though the billing is conveying the show is for adults, the One Million Mom organization believes that this show is targeting kids. The organization released a statement in which it accuses the show of wanting the kids to tune in, so they end up enjoying some of the humor coming from the show, which is tapered for adults. They are concerned the show will become a destination for kids each week.
Another complaint coming from the One Million Moms is that many parents “unknowingly” will let their children watch the show and by the time they find out just how perverted in nature this venue is, it will be too late. This Muppet Show tackles topics that range from “sex to drugs,” claims the One Million Moms group.
Another complaint about this show coming from the One Million Mom’s website suggests that “Parents will have to explain to confused children that the program they once were allowed to watch is no longer a nice show.” They continue with, “This would have been completely unnecessary if ABC had made the program follow its original family-friendly design.”
The ABC website for the Muppet Show gives a blurb about the show and what you can expect:
“The Muppets return to primetime with a contemporary, documentary-style show. For the first time ever, a series will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, breakups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires. This is a more adult, new Muppet series, for ‘kids’ of all ages.”
It sounds as if the Muppets have been made a bit more interesting for adults to tune in, especially the ones who grew up watching these puppets. It looks as though ABC realizes that when you were a kid, you loved them, now it’s time to find out what made them tick! It also sound as if they plan to keep it tame enough for the entire family to watch.
The Wrap reports that the One Million Mom group is asking just how many parents want to explain the context of a “sexually charged joke” to their kids? The group claims that if kids get in front of the TV and watch this new Muppet venue, then that is what parents are going to end up doing.
When it boils down to it, each parent has that right to say what their children can and cannot watch. The Muppets have been seen in movies involved in some adult-like action.
Miss Piggy has been trying to hook up with Kermit for years. She has been decked out in clothes that offer an abundance of cleavage, as described by the Fashion Reporter. The Muppets weren’t always geared just for kids, which is evident in the mode of Miss Piggy’s attire at times.
As far as this new Muppet offering, there is certainly enough concerns about the venue online to give parents a fair heads up, but is this show something that really needs a caution blurb? Airing this show at 8 p.m. on a school night might also get the curiosity going for some parents to seek out the description of what the episodes have in store.
This show is airing in primetime, which frequently offers shows with adult content. Once again, it is up to the parents to screen what their kids are going to watch. A little research by parents is the best defense of all when deciding on the appropriateness of the show for young eyes and ears!
