One Direction won the two prizes for which the group was nominated at the 2015 American Music Awards, which took place at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Nov. 22. ABC had the U.S. telecast. One Direction won the awards for Artist of the Year and Favorite Duo or Group – Rock/Pop. They won the same American Music Awards in 2014.
In the Artist of the Year category, One Direction was up against Luke Bryan, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj. In the category of Favorite Duo or Group – Rock/Pop, the other nominees were Maroon 5 and Walk the Moon. Jennifer Lopez hosted the show.
One Direction also performed “Perfect” at the ceremony. Other artists performing at the awards show included Justin Bieber, Lopez, Coldplay, 5 Seconds of Summer, Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Alanis Morissette, Pentatonix, The Weeknd, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Ariana Grande, Luke Bryan, Karen Fairchild, Meghan Trainor, Charlie Puth, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Terry Bridges, Walk the Moon and Carrie Underwood. “Perfect” is the second single from One Direction’s fifth album, Made in the A.M., which was released on Nov. 13, 2015.
While One Direction was on stage to accept the prize for Favorite Duo or Group – Rock/Pop, One Direction’s Niall Horan said, “It’s as simple as this: We wouldn’t have been able to do this without our fans and all the votes they’ve done for us. It’s absolutely incredible that we’ve done this again. We love your very much. Thank you.” One Direction’s Harry Styles added, “To everyone who works with us, everyone who’s supported us over the last five years, thank you so much. We love you all across the board. You are brilliant to work with. Thank you. And again, to the fans, thank you so much.”
During One Direction’s speech for Artist of the Year, One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson said, “Wow, this is absolutely incredible to receive this award now, two years in a row. Thank you so much. This is a testament to how incredible our fans are. You’ve been great to us this year, so thank you, thank you, thank you!” One Direction’s Liam Payne added, “We honestly can’t believe we get to win awards like this. We want to thank everybody who’s helped us over the last five years. Obviously, we’re going on a little break now to spend time with our families. It’s going to be amazing. We want to thank our families too. Columbia, our [record] label, you’ve been amazing. The AMAs, we’ve got so many great memories. Thank you so much for having us. Thank you.”
Other artists who won prizes at the 2015 American Music Awards included The Weeknd, Underwood, Grande, Bryan, Swift, Nicki Minaj, Sam Hunt and Fall Out Boy.
One Direction came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010. Since then, the group has become the show’s best-selling act worldwide, with numerous No. 1 hits, sold-out tours and awards.
Fifth Harmony, the girl group that came in third place on “The X Factor” U.S. in 2012, was a presenter at the show. Other presenters included Harrison Ford, Prince, Anna Kendrick, Julianne Hough, Ellie Goulding, Ciara, Jeremy Renner, Norman Reedus, Jenny McCarthy, Taylor Lautner, Terry Crews, Jared Leto and Hailee Steinfeld.
