Old Spice makes it mark on Men’s Style with an array of grooming products and a man would be smart to buy the products and take it with him in his backpack or briefcase to work or school because any man with a developed sense of style will get dirty during the day. A man with a developed sense of style knows he may have a day that gets off to a bad start or he has to roll up his sleeves and “get dirty” at work or at play with friends. Whatever the case may be, a man can use these grooming products, a change of shirt and at least a public bathroom to refresh himself, collect his thoughts and possibly readjust his approach to the day to finish it strong. From a web article on WebMd.com, a Harris interactive poll found that excessive sweating negatively affects confidence, careers and social lives. There is a difference to using a deodorant and an antiperspirant where one is to introduce fragrances in the body to control bacteria that could cause body odor and the other is to give the sweat glands a “temporary plug” which prevents someone for a period from sweating which could create the body odor.
The body spray line that Old Spice has also comes with a cautionary tutorial for men who may not know how to properly apply body spray which results in overwhelming others with the strong deodorant. From an Old Spice Scent Responsibly Survey (conducted by YPulse, surveying girls and guys from 13-25) in January 2014:
- 3 out of 4 young guys and 83 percent of young women admit overspraying is an issue
- 70 percent of guys surveyed said they weren’t taught how to properly apply body spray
- 45 percent of young guys re-applied the body spray because they thought the scent was fading
So, they created a Re-fresh line of body sprays which captures the fragrance into the body (Procter & Gamble’s proprietary Re-fresh technology) instead of creating the spray clouds which lend to the fragrance leaving the body as soon as applied. A body spray can be used “in a pinch” by a man when he sees that throughout the day (for instance) he has a bit of body odor but needs to stay around at work for a professional event later in the evening. This survey and the resulting “Smellcome to Manhood” marketing campaign are hilarious with their delivery but make sense. Their newest “Make a Smell-mitment” campaign continues the push for their products and scents. A man may wonder if carrying around all these products would make him appear vane or too concerned with his appearance but a backpack, his car or drawers in his cubicle at work could store all the products plus a few dress shirts. This is the difference between a man and a woman’s approach to style where a woman must use many accessories and combinations to complete and maintain her silhouette, a man simply has to maintain his basic staples (shoes, shirt, suit, pants) to appear presentable.
