Denver residents are always on the go. Snow days help to slow down a hectic life. Don’t just sleep away those snow days. Spend time doing these fun old fashioned indoor activities. Don’t hide behind your computer screen. Instead, use the opportunity to reconnect with your friends and family or just yourself. Sure, everyone knows about this stuff. How many people actually do it though? We’re all too busy with our phones, tablets, video games and such. Why not be a trend setter?
Read a conventional book
Sure, e-books are convenient. But they don’t smell or feel as good. They don’t appeal to your tactile senses the way a real book does. Curl up with a nice warm blanket on a snow day. Make yourself a cup of indulgent old fashioned hot cocoa and read a real live book. Sip and read slowly to savor every word. Snuggle down into that blanket. Make the most of your mini vacation. Don’t answer the phone or the door. Just enjoy being alone with your thoughts.
Play a board game
Nothing to do on a snowy day? Kids home from school and driving you crazy? This activity will cheer everyone up and calm down bored children. Call everyone to the table to play a board game. Dust off that good old fashioned Monopoly game. Put it to good use. No board games in the house? Buy a new one. Learn to play it together as a family. There’s no better bonding or learning experience in the world.
Getting family members to do a jigsaw puzzle
Back in the day, moms always had a card table set up in the living room with a jigsaw puzzle on it. Family members just sat down and added a few pieces as time allowed. Sometimes it was done in a week and sometimes in one day. Don’t force it. In fact, don’t say a word. You might turn off the interest of those tech savvy kids of yours. Just set up a table and dump that box out. Let family members decide whether or not to join you.
Here’s another alone time indoor activity that’s perfect for snow days. Curl right up in that blanket again. Test your vocabulary with a crossword puzzle. Keep in touch with family members by shouting out an occasional clue. Who knows? They may even join you. This is one of those sneaky learning activities where everyone is just having fun.
Don’t waste your snow day
This isn’t upstate NY or the Rocky Mountains. This is Denver. We don’t get quite as many opportunities to stay home due to inclement weather. Make the most of it by going back in time. You might be surprised how many childhood memories resurface. Playing old time games makes you feel like a kid again. And that’s always a good thing, snow day or not.
